S50 Problem, dead bike....

I have had some problems lately with the S50. On Saturday, I parked it a relatives house for a few hours, went out to start it... It starts, but dies right away... okay no problem choke it a little. Clutch in, kick stand up, switch to run, in neutral. Nothing... no power. WTF!! So I turn the key off, take it out, and think for a bit... Okay lets try again. Key in, to "on", all the lights come one, I have power, it starts, yay... Drive it home and park it.

Sunday. Start her up, drive it all day long on a trip. Come to a stop at a liquor store. Come out to start it up again, and nothing! No power at all. Key out again, then key back in. Power once again, then I go to start it and all I hear is the starter click, and the bike dies again... No power again. This time it lasts, no power what so ever. So I try to push start it, and it fires and runs again. I ride it home, turn it off and starts it again no problem. Okay, this is weird there has to be something wrong.

Monday, start it up in the morning for work, ride to work, no problems. Start it at lunch, no problem. Start it at the end of the day, no problem. Park it for the night no problems. Then on Tuesday morning I go to put the key in, power on, lights one, go to start it, and the started clicks, and dies completely. Now it has been sitting in my garage dead.

Anyone else expirience this with their bikes? To me, it sounds like a short or something. It just dies completely, no warning or dimming of anything, just DEAD. Or is that how bike batteries work, they just cut out when they are drained. But I don't know how it could drain, I don't leave lights on or anything... And on top of all that, for any of you Calgarians familiar with Blackfoot motosports, they are a bunch of complete useless douche bags. So ****.... Any suggestions out there?... would be appreciated, thanks.

Cliff's: Dead Bike for one minute. Running bike second try. Runs for a day everything fine. Park the bike start it again DEAD, running after jump start. Runs fine again, starts a few times. Parked over night, go to start in morning dead again after starting then dying. son of a......

I would bet that the battery connections are loose. Wiggle or rotate them around to get e good connection, then tighten the heck out of them and check them every few months.

Yes, it was the battery connections. Took it out, cleaned it a little, then I put it back in. Started up fine. But it did it again, even after I really tightened the connections down. But I just gave them a quick shake, and the power returned. There is definitely a problem that is going to have to be fixed, but now I am in no rush, since I can fix it on the fly whenever it happnes.

Thanks for the input!

Ahh...sounds like something is touching the side or top of the battery box when the battery moves around a little, causing a short. Play with the battery undtil you can duplicate the problem, finding out which terminal or wire is touching, and rotate the wire around so it won't touch anymore.

Or just jam a rubber pencil eraser on each side of the battery to stop it from moving around inside the box. ;)

Yeah, I have decided I have to wedge the battery still. When I go to wiggle the wires after it dies, there is alot of play in the battery. I figured it must be shorting on the surronding metal.

Thanks Dr. Bob, you saved me alot of waiting time. Stupid Blackfoot (Stupid ass local bike dealer) wanted to book me in for the end of August... WTF?!?!

Glad I could help...there is little on an Intruder/ S50 you can't either fix yourself or swap out with a new part, so forget where your dealer is and just ask here first!

I just had the same problem until I read your posting! My bike would just die! No lights, nothing, completely dead. It has been sitting on my patio for two weeks. I have talked to several bike shops and all of them seem to think it the fuses. I checked the fuses and all looked good. I have checked everything. I even checked the battery cables to see if they were tight. Then I read your posting and went wiggled the wiring for the cables and "pow"...I had lights on my bike. Unfortunately, the battery is too weak now to start it up!

I just figured mine out after the longest time.... I would keep wiggling the wires to start it, but was getting frustrated with it. I took the bike on a road trip out to BC, about a 2000 kms road trip. Half way through the bike completely died again, not even wiggling it would do anything. Luckily, I had the trusty tool kit the bike comes with, and what a tool kit, haven't seen one that extensive before. Anyways, do this, and it will remedy your problem.

Take the battery out, as much as it seems like the wires are shorting out on surronding metal, they are not. It is a simple 5 minute fix. Tighten down the posts, not the actual wires them selves, but the posts on the battery have a seperate bolt holding them in place, the vibration from the bike rattles them loose something fierce over a period of time. I found even full turn, or even half turn was enough to lose contact and eventually power. By shaking the wires, it would make contact again for a few minutes, days, whatever, until it vibrated loose again. After a few days in my destinated town I tried fixing this damn bike, and thats all it turned out to be, so I finally bought some lock washers, and put them on the post bolts, and the connection bolts. Hasn't loosened up since.

So remove the battery, tighten down the bolts on the posts, install some lock washers, and you should be good to go.
Hope that helps... Again, thanks to Dr.Bob for pointing me in the right direction.

Can anyone tell me of an alternate oil filter for the Susuzki S50. I hate paying those stupid dealer prices. Thieves.......everyone of them!

Thanks
Don

I had the exact same electrical problem on my S50. My problem was the bolts that hold the ring terminals on were hitting the bolts that hold the battery post in place, giving the feeling that the bolts for the ring terminals were tight when in fact they were not. Shorter bolts solved the problem completely.

Hey, anyone know the size of washers needed?

This has been happening to my brother's S50 and we thought it was a grounding problem, cleaned the connections and it ran well for a couple weeks. Now its doing the same thing again where you can wiggle wires and it will get the lights back on and maybe a click or two from the starter. With my screwy work schedule, I can't get to the bike before the hardware stores close and he's at school.

Email Gman of Gmanindustries.com. He sells a Gbat that has star washers included and can tell you the size you'd need to get. I'm sure he'd even drop a few in an envelope for a buck or two if you were desperate to get them.

Just take the bolt down to Home Depot or lowes, even ACE. The big problem is that the cable bolts are to long and they bottom against the block, giving the indication that they are tight when the cable is still a litle loose. shorter bolts and the washers will slove the problem.
