S50 and first gear

I've got a 2008 s50 and I have just had the initial service done on it. When I first got the bike I noticed it didn't like first gear- it seems that it hesitates or chugs and then all of a sudden a burst of power. It got better as I got closer to the 1000 km mark but it is now doing it again after the service. Is this normal after an oil change etc? I can live with it but a sudden jolt of power while going around a tight right corner is not the safest. Also while downshifting and I give some throttle to get the rpms up it will sometimes 'spit' and sound as if it is 'choking'- it sounds as if whatever it is is coming from the front of the bike underneath the gas tank?
Thanx for the help in advance.

NO! It may be your riding technique but it doesn't sound like it......especially if this is not your first bike.
Two words:
WARRANTY SERVICE

it might be your choke. I have noticed unless it is extremely hot out side that I have to run my bike for the most part with 1/4 choke otherwise it sputters then when you give it gas it takes right off.

I know it's not completely my technique because as I said it seemed to get better and it is now doing it after the service. As for turning corners in first gear, I don't do it. I am taking about from a stop sign or light that it acts up. I had a problem with the carbs when i first got the bike and had to run it with the choke out which I was told by the suzuki mechanics after they fixed the carbs fouled the plugs and they tried to charge me for new ones until i made sure they understood i didn't have a choice because the bike wouldn't run without the choke out- I'm tired of calling them with my problems because it hasn't been all that great so Im just seeing if anyone here has the answers... oh ya- when the dealership returned my bike after the service it had been left out in the rain and was covered in dust and dirt- even the seat and that was how it was returned to me. Nothing like good service.

How far is it to the next closest dealer?
Any good independents close?
The things come from the factory lean.......but not THAT lean.....at least not on purpose.
There is a relatively simple fix. The idle jets need a little tweek. The problem is finding someone willing to DO it.

I notice on my S50 it has to be completely warmed up and the hesitation is gone. When it is cold, I run with the choke slightly out till it warms up.

You guys really need to find better dealers. If the choke is adjusted correctly, the idle speed set right, and the bike warmed up for a few minutes, you should be able to roll on the throttle with the choke all the way in at any speed and not have the bike sputter or hesitate. The S50 should respond to throttle off idle like it was shot out of a cannon, not chug before the power kicks in- you should be more worried about accidental wheelies than stalling, and you should never have to ride with the choke out unless the outside air is below freezing.

I have had similar problems with mine as far as running it with the choke out, never had any sputtering though. Mine just really hates the cold, if its cold out at all I have to run it for a good 10 minutes before I can close the choke on it and even then sometimes it will die if I do. Unless its really hot outside which it really hasn't been yet here I have to open the choke to get it to start pretty much everytime. I just surppassed 500 miles though so it will be going in for its first service in the next week or so. Hopefully they can figure it out then and I will let ya know if I find anything out.

What's the elevation there? Know a guy up in Colorado Springs that says his runs like crap above 60-70 mph unless he has the choke out. According to Marc at Factory Pro, pulling the choke out on this bike is like adding 1-2 main jet sizes instantly, so if it runs better at speed when warm with the choke out, your main jet is too small. Huge differences in elevation could account for a lean condition (compared to my elevation), even if completely stock.

Could it just be that the carbs are set too lean?? If I was to perform Dr.Bob's pipe mod would it fix the problem with the sputtering and fix the throttle response from a stand still?

Just bought my first bike, S50 about a month ago. Yes it is cold blooded and I do have to choke it for about a minute and minute only (shorter in the afternoons). I have found that it will die right away unless I pull the choke knob out as far as it goes, past where it will stay clicked in on its own, so I have to physically hold the choke knob pulled out as far as it will go for about a minute. Then I can push the choke back in all the way and ride away. I do not have to ride with the choke for the first 10 minutes like some of you have said and do not have backfire. I live in Denver so I obviously live at altitude. And I do not have a problem running the bike above 60-70 mph without the choke. It runs just fine. Just wish it had a 6th gear.

You might be able to turn the small black knob around the choke knob shaft clockwise to tighten its grip on the choke knob shaft and prevent it from slipping back in.
