S40 vs S50 vs M50 Passenger capability

Between the S40, S50 and M50 I wanted to know how they compare in passenger ride comfort and how well the bike handles the weight in terms of power loss. Looking for the cheapest option for a primarily commuter bike that will also be capable of putting my wife on the back to take occasional weekend trips in the 200 mile range. So any details you guys could give me on how these 3 bikes stack up in that regard I would appreciate. Thanks.

My S50 is much better after I put the gel pads in the seat. My G/F and I have done several 200+ mile rides. Still has good power for passing and handles the extra weight well.

I agree with Scott58. My wife and I take long rides/trips on my '06 S50 with the stock seat. Although my wife used to complain somewhat, she doesn't anymore now that she has a Pro Pad gel seat cushion.

The S40 is very small and underpowered for 2-up riding. The S50 has a lot more power then the M50, but the passenger seat is small and the pasenger footpeg location is a bit cramped. But I've carried a passenger ona thousand-mile in 24-hour iron butt ride, so it is up to the task. A better seat helps, as do footpeg extenders, but the real 'must have' is the sissy bar.

Both motors are 50ci, but they are not the same. Dr. Bob explains it quite well here.

I've got a friend that used to have a C50. No chance for him. Another of our riding friends has the M50...he can't keep up with me either. They've both tried, again and again. It ain't gonna happen.

Thanks for the help guys I went ahead and bought an S50 today so we'll see how it works out.

Now the question is did I get a good deal I paid $6534 for an '08 straight out of the crate, good deal or did I get took a little bit pushing for a black one?

Congrats Sixcb!

Never ridden an S50 but I've always admired them. Post a few photos of the S50, will you?

Enjoy and safe rides.

Ah... I'll trade ya.

The S50 has carbs, the other 50 cu in motors have FI. The power is in the same ball park but the big difference is the weight, the S50 weighs around 100 lbs less than the other 50's, therefore will out accelerate the others. It is not as comfortable. It is kind of the hot rod of the 50's. I hope this helps.

My theory is you bought it now so don't worry about what you paid for it. If your happy that all that counts. People tend to lie about those things because nobody wants to be the one who paid too much. Plus if the guy already has the bike he is a wiener anyway because he just wants to to feel better than you. Just lie like most others so if somebody asks you what you paid for it they think you got a better deal than them and it just pisses them off. Then you can ride away smiling knowing that not only did they lie to you but they are going to be grumbling the whole day through. By the way if your wife is with you have her lean over while you are leaving and have her whisper in the jack asses ear you are 12 inches also.

So I picked up my new '08 S50 from the dealership on friday rode it around a little by myself was finally able to get my girl on it and take it for a ride today(sunday). :D The bike seems to handle the extra weight just fine(then again she only weighs like a 120lbs) don't have a sissy bar yet but it still wasn't to bad of a ride only went about 40 miles or so though.

We did have a close/kinda scary call with a goose though, never encountered that before, came around a corner and right in the middle of the rode was great big canadain goose, not knowing how to react exactly to something that unlike most animals has not only a horizontal field of travel but a vertical one I honked and banked left all the while making ka-kah noises(which my girsl has mocked me for now for the remainder of the day) the goose lifted of and took flight just barely clearing our right shoulders. So ya it was a little spooky don't know if I could've handle the situation any better(besides maybe the ka-kah sounds ), but who knows. Anyone else ever had a similar occurance?

New? Sounds like an okay price to me, but I haven't looked at new prices in a while. I paid $ for my 1999 in 2004. Then I paid $ for my wife's 1994 in 2007. Then I paid $ for my other 1999 in 2007.

Ya the $6534 was for a new '08 still in the crate when I bought it and that was the out the door price including taxes, licensing, and fees, etc but I could've got a white '07 for $6180 from another shop so i paid about $500 more for the black one but its newer and i really like it so like others have said I guess that's all that matters!:)
