S1 pain following fusion

:jester:I had a spinal fusion for a spondylolisthesis of L4 and L5.

I now have a lot of pain in the S1 area.

I have a partially sacralised L5. Would it be worth me asking the surgeon for L5 and S1 to be fused? I did originally think they were going to fuse them since I was at one time going to have a two stage op.

I also have a lot of hip pain and cannot sleep on my side at night. I have arthritis in the hip but could the origin of the pain be my back?

I am confused.

I get very stiff leaving anything more than the vertical and ache like mad if I have bent down.

The fsion did cure most of my leg pain although I still get a burining pain down the outsides of my thighs.

Hos long ago did you have your fusion? If it has been within the last 66-9 months, it'snot unusual to still be having pain. Especially nerve pain. Nerves don't like to be messed with and of course when you have surgery, they move the nerves out of the way. It can take a loooonng time for them to settle down. If you are within the first 6 months of surgery, you should be adhering to the no BLT as that puts strain on your back and the fusion. It can take 6 months before you start to see fusion.

when you sleep try laying on your back and put two or three pillows under your knees so that it releaves the pressure on the small of your back and see if that doesn't help some. I sleep with a wedge under my legs to help with it.

good luck!

I had a fusion from S1-L4 and I have no pain. I am also 24 but I to had terrible hip pain and after the surgery I have none. You still might be sort of unstable down near S1 it might not hurt to ask about fusing it. Either they will say no or yes so its 50/50.

Thanks

I will ask when I see them on 25th October. Having gone this far, I am not afraid of further surgery.

You may also want to have your SI joints checked out as well. Complications of a spinal fusion can also include problems with the SI joint. I know, both of mine are affected. Also, dysfunction of the SI joint is often over looked. In fact there are many people who think they have a back problem and actually have back surgery, when it is later revealed that their real problem was their SI joint:eek:!!....janiee
