Can't say that I'm an awfully big fan of classic Russian cinema, and the modern stuff hasn't really come into its prime yet (I look at it as something just around the corner that'll suprise us all ;)).

Battleship Potemkin, Ivan the Terrible and October have all bored me to tears. Slow and too melodramatic, even if they do have a strong legacy (particularly Potemkin).
I have heard that 'Solaris' is really 'one to watch' and I'm looking out for it on channel four - although by their poor recent outing for foreign films, I could be waiting for some time...:(
 
Have any of you seen "Night watch"? It's a very good Russian Sci-Fi / Fantasy movie ("Lord of the Rings" meets "Prophecy"). It's been out on DVD for some time, but since Fox bought all American distribution rights, they have mandated to stop making NTSC formatted dvRAB of it. The disk has been slowly disappearing from even Russian stores in America. And Fox kept postponing the release until next week, while sequel "Day Watch" is already out in Russia. Ain't US movie studios great !?!
 
I have the original Russian DVD of Night Watch and thought it was an excellent science fiction film. I had no idea that the sequel was already made - is it available on DVD in Russia yet?

I am not surprised in the least about Fox attempting to stop anymore Russian released DVD's - typical Hollywood. Miramax did that with the likes of Jackie Chan's Police Story 3, Drunken Master 2 and Tai Chi Master.

The only other Russian films I have seen are 72 Meter (good film about the real life tragedy about the ubmarine that sunk a few years ago) and Battleship Potemkin (excellent). I have got Come and See, which is supposed to be one of the best war films ever, but not got round to watching it as of yet.
 
the sequel has become the biggest film in russian history, beating company 9 and nigh****ch...

...good to see that its not only america and the far east that can do excitiong blockbusters! :cool:

Is Russian Ark the one filmed in one continuous shot? I've seen the first 20 mins 3 or 4 times but never sat through the whole thing. Gimme Hollywood any day of the week :rolleyes: Plus do Russian movies get shown much in UK cinemas and if so do they still get the Pearl and Dean bit, or has that ceased? "Baa ba, Baa ba,Baa ba,Baa ba,Baa baaa baaa, and so on" Thats the best bit about watching a film at the cinema.
 
It's a pity Russian Film and TV drama are almost never shown in the UK (with English subtitles for people like me who don't know Russian). My favourite writers are nearly all Russian but only a handfull of Russian films have been released in the UK or shown on TV in recent years.

I remember seeing "Prisoner of the Caucasus" a few years ago (it's based on a Tolstoy or Lermontov story IIRC ?) - a very good film.

Elem Klimov's brilliant film "Come and See" was also released here.
 
I have found out that Day Watch has been released on DVD in Russia but unfortunatly with no English subtitles. I wonder if that was something the distributor did or Fox told the distributor not to put English subs on the disc. Either way, it's a shame as I was looking forward to watching it.
 
I think the distributors just don't bother doing the minimal work (some software & a little extra testing??) required to put the subtitling on to DVRAB aimed only at the local market. I've bought fairly obscure art-house fillms (ie no commercial value in excluding sub-titles) in France only to find there are no English subtitles :mad: .
