Rurouni Kenshin: Greatness, or an overrated show that came along at the right time?

the sony dub was painful on my ears...really mediocre dub. And it wasn't the actors themselves, it was just not polished. I won't lie I liked the media blasters toonami dub it was pretty good and the acting didn't make me feel like my ears bled on the inside

all that said, I did like RK, but as you said before, there are far too many problems with the anime. The manga is the definitive ultimate kenshin for me and it was really good

No, the anime has not dated that well as too many things were changed and the animation just plain looks like the era it was made in. The manga has no filler, gets right to the point, and manages to look a bit more timeless in it's execution.

In this day and age, if you want to see what the fuss is about Rurouni Kenshin, then you need to read the manga. The anime is simply not the full experience in any way.

Now if they gave it a new anime series, that would be great.

Eh, I'll half-heartedly vote that its overrated. Back when it first aired, I was all set to be excited about it, but then the the goofy-expression slapstick that started the first episode...just took me out of it. I watched parts of it, but when never too into it. Probably doesn't help that I think missed the better parts of the Kyoto Arc. Missed his fight with that policeman-guy, but I did catch the three-episode final fight that was supposed to take place in the span of 15 minutes.

Yeah, I never took too seriously, so no strong opinion either way. But I did enjoy the historical bits. And I think that was my first exposure to the southern accent in anime, so that was certainly amusing!
