Running advice from Military folk?

hi i'm 20 years old and i plan on joining the Army once i finish my degree in criminal Justice/ Law Enforcement, i should have it done by the fall of 2010 if i play my cards right. I want to join the infantry with an Airborne slot and shot at RIP. However, if i don't make it into the Rangers i wouldn't have a problem being a Screaming Eagle like my grandfather was in the 101rst or being sent to the 82nd. I'm not accepting defeat already by saying that i wouldn't mind being in those other two divisions but i'm just looking on the bright side in case i fail.

Anyway my question is in regards to running. When I started out running again in May it took me a pathetic 18:45 to run two fucking miles. But I stuck with my work outs and what do you know as of last week i ran my two miles in 13:51. however this morning i did it in 14:20.

My current running work out consist of: Monday= 2 mile timed run
Tuesday= off because i start school at 9 am and don't get out until 8:30 pm, Wednesday= 4 mile run, Thursday & Friday= 5 mile run, and then Saturday and Sunday off because i have work all day.

i was thinking that maybe i should run everyday Monday-Thurs so that i could give my body the 3 day break to heal up or is that a dumb idea. So please if i can get some advice from Army Soldiers, Marines, etc that would be awesome. Thanks
other PT scores as of today

Push ups 2 mins: 75

Sit ups 2 mins: 80

Chin ups: 15

Your fine, you don't need three days to heal from a 5 mile run.

If you ran 20 miles, then you would need 3 days.

Just keep doing what your doing. Maybe move the thursday 5 miles to monday and move the 2 miles to thursday.

RIP is for E-5's and below.

You cannot go into the Rangers right after commissioning.

You have to be a 1st Lt promotable ( takes 3 years )

To even apply for the Ranger regiment as an Officer.

You are in a great position seeing as you still have a year. You should be a total PT stud scoring a 300 with another 12 months to work on those. With your running I would turn one of those days into interval training, this will help with your speed. Check out tabata sprints they are killer and take up very little time.

Also get rid of chin ups and do pull ups there is a difference and pull ups are the ones you need.

Good luck to you.

Great attitude, and respectable PT numbers. Don't let anyone tell you they are good enough: 'standards' are for people who think minimums matter. Keep your mind focused on excellence...not 'passing.'

You would be well served to switch up your workout a bit..sounds like you have reached a plateau. At a minimum, add some track workouts (sprints) and fartlek (google it) training. You need to constantly 'shock' your body with harder, different workouts. Go get a copy of Stew Smith's 12 Weeks to BUD/S. He does a great job of showing how to vary the types of workouts you do. Even better would be to do the Crossfit WOD every other day, and do runs as sustainment!

Crossfit's anaerobic focus is huge for building strength, speed, and endurance. I can't recommend it highly enough. Lots of shaggy-hair guys agree with me.

Good luck...and ditch the Army. You sound like good raw material for an officer of Marines. We'll send you to OCS this summer, if you can get selected by the board. Packages are due on 01OCT...get cracking.

On Monday instead of a 2 mile timed run, try running intervals, or wind sprints. Sprint 100 yds, then slow jog back around to your starting point, then sprint again. As many as you can.

good aspirations but the screaming eagles are no longer an airborne unit. there is the 82nd airborne. 82nd=double ass 101=puking buzzard. don't get upset that is what we called them when i was s f.
