Rules of Shotgun Debate - Please help?

In summer school my friend and I went to play hangman. My friend shotgunned to write the blanks first. I then drew the actual hangman drawing and shotgunned. His shotgun does not count because the game was not built yet... correct? Just like you have to see the car in order to shotgun you have to see the hangman game to shotgun.

He claims that his shotgun counts because he saw the board. I say thats like saying I see some metal, thats going to be a car so shot gone. You can not shotgun something that has NOT been built yet... right?

I realize this debate is stupid but please tell me who is right in this debate

"Shotgun" is a rather informal rule, so the exact details are a bit fuzzy, but... I'd say that it's legitimate to call shotgun once an action has been committed but before it has been completed. Some people say you can't call shotgun for riding in the front seat of a car until the car is in sight, but I think it's acceptable once you've decided to drive somewhere. So, "Let's drive to the mall" "Okay, but I call shotgun" would, in my opinion, be valid.

So in this case, I'd have to agree with your friend -- not because he saw the board, but because you had already committed to playing the game.
