This is not a rant, but I think there is a missed opportunity here.
In the fiscal year end report of the royal family the travel costs have gone up considerably. The travel expenses of the Queen, Prince Andrew, and Princess Anne all dropped by substantial amounts, but Prince Charles costs zoomed 50% largely because of expensive jet charters to promote his environmental causes.
- The most expensive domestic jet charter was £33,400 for an overnight trip from London to Belfast City on 20-21 May-2008. That is a distance of 310 miles each way. In contrast, Ryan Air gets £8,500 in ticket sales each way, and another £5,000 goes to taxes and fees if it fill every one of 189 seats on it's Boeing 737-800 that flies from Stansted to Belfast City.
------------
My question is if he is going to give public lectures on environmental awareness, would it be possible if he could rent a sexy little turboprop to do these short flights. I know they are only 9 seaters, but perhaps some of his staff could fly commercial. Their economical cruise speed is 368 mph, but they can go as fast as 455 mph.

Businessmen can rent a 4 seat air taxi (no private bathroom) for £2,600 that can fly out of Northolt Airport (same airport the royals use) and go anywhere in the UK same day return. That may be undignified for royal use, but isn't there some middle ground between dignity and concern for the environment? Prince Charles can set an example for the business community.

BTW, the highest "per mile" charge was £8,885 to go one way from Humberside airport to Northolt (139.5 miles). That is almost nothing but takeoff and approach. I would think that they would normally use their helicopter which can cruise at 215 mph and fly for almost 400 miles. Perhaps it was busy or in maintenance.

The report does not list the type of aircraft, but I assure you that it is a big one for that price. Do you think he is missing an opportunity to show some concern for the environment?
PLZ do not compare with the cost of transporting the POTUS. He is the most expensive person in the entire world to move (even a hundred miles). They usually have a half a dozen helicopters for security and to confuse anyone with a shoulder launched missile. When he goes out to dinner he could probably buy the restaurant for what the security detail costs.
