A month ago, I went to the ER thinking I was having a heart attack, but knowing in the back of my mind, it was probably anxiety. (I have health anxiety). They started with an EKG and gave me fluiRAB and drew blood, then sent me back to the waiting room. My EKG came back showing no heart attack, blood work was normal. The Dr. came in the room and gave me anxiety medicine in an IV they had attached. He told me the results, but said they'd want to admit me because if I'd had a heart attack, it could still show up as long as a day later. He admitted me and said they'd do 2 more sets of bloodwork and 2 more ekg's just to be sure. To top it all off, they put me in an ICU room because the hospital was full. I felt that all of this made me panic so much more. During this time they also asked if I was an organ donor and asked if I had a living will. I was discharged the following day with 3 normal blood tests and 3 normal EKGs.

Does this sound routine and normal? It really makes me feel scared when I think back on it.

SounRAB normal to me. Hospitals like to get their moneys worth when you go in for a visit, be it from you or your insurance company. I was once held for over 12 hours for a panic attack, even though i insisted i just had an ekg, echo at my cardiologist they still insisted i get another one done while at the hospital, blood work also, especially in the hospital. When you normally get blood work done at alab, it takes them weeks to get the results to your doctor, at the hospital they have to get the results ASAP.

ekg's and blood work aren't cheap, especially to have it done twice?!?! also the whole asking if your an organ donor and have a will is pretty messed up, especially since they knew you are an anxious person. Are you old? maybe thats why they asked. Other than that they can't really risk just letting you go without testing first, just in case you did have a heart attack.

In all fairness to the hospital, we have no idea how she presented, or what she told them. If they were not aware she was an anxious person and she told them she was having symptoms of a heart attack, they really must rule that out as a possibility. I'm sure it's difficult for ER's to know how to treat patients like us :) And, another anxious person might like the extra tests to help further rule out a heart attack.

Also, I bet the organ donor/living will was standard proceedure for being admitted overnight.

Thanks for your reply. I'm a 38 year old female. They also told me that when I saw my doctor, I was to have a stress test done. When I went to see him, he did not think it was necessary.
