Rooting/Jailbreaking HTC Desire (New to the whole scene)

Ok so i'm new to this whole scene and i don't understand everything yet, but i know that on the iPhone you can like hack it or something so in stead of getting apps from the App Store by paying money on them, you can get them for free on the internet and install them manually from your SD card.

Can you do the same with an HTC Desire? I've heard about Rooting, but i'm not sure if that's the same thing.

Also a nonrelated question - do you always get a 4GB microSD when buying an HTC Desire?

yes the card that comes with the desire is 4GB class 2 card (in the UK anyway).

rooting the desire allows super user access to the phone, and allows you to install apps to the sd card and not just be confined to installing apps to the 147mb of phone memory.

when android 2.2 is modified by HTC and we can update, we will get this feature without rooting. this should be sometime before october, probably late july, early september.

you can untick a check box on the phone in settings on any android phone, that allows you to install apps from sources other than the marketplace, rooting has nothing to do with this.

So let's say there's an app on the marketplace called App1 that costs 10$. If i find like a ROM of the same app online for free, download it and put it on my SD card, i can install it and use it for free without even rooting?

Firstly, there are hardly any apps that cost $10. Unlike Apple's Appstore where most apps are paid apps, around 70% of apps are free in Android. Since June there are a more free apps on the Android Market than on Apple's Appstore. It's very rare you need to pay for an app, and when you do they're usually $1 to $5, which isn't much. If you think that's too much then there's almost certainly a free equivalent.

You're mistaking ROMs (essentially Android itself) for applications. You won't be able to find free versions of paid apps online, unless you go to some very dubious places. Most of these places are fake and are just out to defraud you. You also will need to modify your phone to be able to install them.

While there are ways to get around paying for apps, there is no way we're going to help you achieve that. It's immoral and illegal. If anyone does post instructions on how to do this I will have no hesitation in deleting their post and banning them from the forums. If a developer, who probably spends weeks of their life working hard on their app (which would be true if it's worth paying for) wants to charge people to use it then that's their prerogative, and we're not going to help you steal their work.
