Rooting and ROMs

I am new to Android and would like to know what these are. I am under the influence that ROM's are a way of tweaking settings in the OS to enable different things such as speed improvements?

Will rooting void the manufactures insurance on my phone (galaxy S)?

To upgrade to 2.2, would I need to root, and then choose a suitable ROM or would rooting automatically upgrade my phone to 2.2?

How do i know which ROM is most suitable for me, or what the difference between each ROM is, and is there a publically available list of ROMs for the galaxy S?

I know there are a lot of questions in this post, but thanks for taking the time to read it

Have you ever flashed a PSP? Or flashed any video game system or piece of technology? This is essentially the same thing.

You are basically changing the software that operates the phone. These pieces of software are called ROMS.

Depending on what phone you have will govern what ROMS you can install. Different ROMS offer different approaches to the same general goal: MAKE THE PHONE BETTER, FASTER, STRONGER, AND FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE.

I suggest checking out http://www.cyanogenmod.com/ for good ROMS.

I wouldn't worry about ROMS until you have a recovery installed. I use ClockworkMod. The recovery allows you to back up your current ROM incase you mess something up trying to get a new one. This is invaluable.

You have to root your phone before you can do anything though. The information is out there.

Don't forget to make back ups, and do your research. The forums are here if you need anything.

thanks a lot for the detailed explanation!

If I do root, will the manufacturer know? This would void my insurance, so would un-rooting return the phone to its original state where the manufacturer would not be able to tell it had been rooted? Obviously il ring up the manufacturer and find out out, but i was just wondering from a non-manufacturers viewpoint?

hey there is an app called one click root that does everything for you. I used it on my nexus 1 and it worked perfect, i do believe they have it for you phone as well just go to the market and type it in search, or go to your web browser on your phone and search for one click root. a link should show up, follow it and download it then open it and install straight to your phone.. ( you might need to use skyfire browser if it does not work with the standard browser )

The Galaxy can be rooted and unrooted without the manufacturer knowing.

thank you people Il have to look into what rooting actually does, apart from allow you to install ROM's. I have heard it improves upon the quadrant score of the Galaxy S, increasing it from 800-900 ish to 1700 ish?

thanks,

that would probably be an android 2.2 custom rom
rooting just gives you the privileges to do with your phone whatever YOU want to do with it or to it i should say. everything else is stuff you do to your phone after you have root.

My advice to you would be do it and don't look back. You will be all the wiser and happier with your choice afterward.

Then you will be stalking the Cyanogen forum for the latest nightly and the changes entailed.

I remember googling 'Root My HTC Hero'. It seemed like just yesterday...*day dream*

oh ok! so are there any websites whicch display the available rom's for the Galaxy S? If i simply wanted to update to 2.2, instead of installing some wierd and wonderful rom, could this be done by rooting and finding a 2.2 rom?

Doesn't look like 2.2 for US versions yet.
