Rooting an Alltel Hero

Hey, this is probably just me being paranoid, but all the stuff I read about on how rooting works for the Hero is based on sprint's version of android, 1.something. Since Alltel's Hero runs 2.1, can anyone give me a little advice? Am I going to regret rooting following instructions that are meant for 1.whatever on sprint?
 
Apparently it is possible with the Sprint Hero with 2.1 already installed, but to do so requires that you install an earlier version of Android first. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572 You probably don't want to install a Sprint ROM on your Alltel Hero... that's a recipe for a whole lot of headaches.

I know there were issues with the Verizon HTC Droid Eris after it was updated to 2.1... that OTA update plugged the leak that made rooting 1.5 possible.
 
true enough, but i'd love to be able to play around with some different roms.

Warning, MANY MANY roms that are based off of sprint will not have working MMS sending. This is the only feature I miss on Froyo. Fortunately, I've only sent maybe 4 MMSs in my life, and they are all to people who also have gmail, so I just gmail the images from my phone.
