It used to be that you did everything you could to avoid taking any government aid because it was an afront to your ability to provide for yourself and your family. Now it's like a status syrabol to be on welfare or other government assistance. People helped each other out, churches and local groups helped as well but you didn't stay on any program because you wanted to take care of yourself.
of course government aid has gotten far out of hand in it's attempt to get more people on the government dole and keep them there.
Welfare and food assistance originally was just the bare minimums needed. We are talking milk, cheese and bread. It wasn't intended for long term use by leeches.
Nowadays you can use food stamps at casinos to garable with, buy just about anything including booze and smokes and the government is more than happy to take money from everyone else to help you maintain your unemployment benefits for 2 (soon to be upped to 3) years.

yep, we have let things get to the point that one way or another, we will have to face this in the very near future.
Either we let government continue on it's current path and it will self destruct the economy, or we take the drastic measures needed to fix things and that too will cause the "entitled poor" to get pissed off
