Roman Civilization Questionss?

I am doing a paper on the Roman Civilization, and I'm stuck on how to start, my first question is 1.) Who was the ruler?-2.) How was ruler selected? How was succession determined? What where the roots of the ruler's power- (divine,military,family?) 3.) Who ruled the area after the collapse? 4.) what did they leave to us?
