From the first time i watched the film, 70s version, ive spoke to a lot of people and asked could it become a real sport? ob not so violent ie deaths, or mega bad injuries, but same track layout, motor bikes, skates, and outfits like the american football guys wear. Not like Gladiators (the T.V prog) but proper sport with leagues. Most people ive spoke to agree, but as im not an expert in sport, id love to know what you guys feel. And before you say it i know it was fantasy,but intresting.

It kind of has on a smaller scale but with similarities with Roller Derby which is a stupid sport played with women. There are about 600 leagues around the world. To my knowledge none in the UK. Taking it to the level of Rollerball IMO will never happen with the bikes because the minute anyone tried health and safety would go nuts and get it shut down. At best you will get an more violent version of Roller Derby.
The rules of Rollerderby says you can block but not in an dangerous way.
To impede the progress of the opposing team's jammer, players may block using body parts above the mid-thigh, excluding forearms, hanRAB, and head. Elbows may not be used in blocking, and cannot be swung at other players or used to hook an opponent's or teammate's arm.
Penalties are given to skaters who block illegally, fight or behave in an unsporting manner, or otherwise break the rules. Possible penalties include sending players to a penalty box (during which time opposing jammers score for opposing skaters in the penalty box when they score their first point in each pass) and expulsion of players. A skater goes to the penalty box for 1 minute immediately upon incurring a major penalty, or after accumulating 4 minor penalties.
Whether it would be allowed that you could allow elbowing people and taking them out like they do in Rollerball I'm really not sure. As I say H&S would have a field day after the first few injuries.

Cool thanks and it's in London. I'll have to try and see it.
I called it a silly sport because the rules are silly, but it's fun to watch. I went and saw the film Whip It with Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore because the film was about it.

I think we will see the emergence of new sports that will introduce a new ruling system, that over time will affect other sports. Though i have alway's wondered about Rollerball actually becoming reality. I could imagine it being underground, similar to underground fighting with no rules. But it would be really expensive to host and certain death would occur at every event.
I'm sure I saw either on the dvd extras or maybe in a booklet that came with it that said that in between filming the cast would actually go onto the track and play a few games.
I think it'd be a good sport to watch. There's a few other films with similar sports too that I'd like to see in real life.
