ROK Viper lights up VoIP over Bluetooth

"Carriers like to throw around the term "unlimited mobile-to-mobile" from time to time, but we don't think this is exactly what they had in mind. ROK's "Viper" VoIP client uses a handset's Bluetooth link to hook it up to a PC sporting a broadband Internet connection, which in turn connects it to any other handset with Viper installed. Better yet, Viper contacts are shown with their availability in a buddy list format -- but the best part? It's all completely free and covers platforms Skype doesn't. Compatibility is limited to a handful of Nokia handsets running S60 right now, but word on the street has ROK releasing on Java and Windows Mobile clients before too long."

anyway http://www.rokviper.com/ is the link and the program only works now with symbian / s60 phones (rok aims to have plans to include Java-powered handsets and Windows devices over the next 3 months).....you download the program to your computer and you download an app to your phone and then it creates a bluetooth connection btwn your phone and your computer and allows you to call anyone on your viper buddy list from your cell phone via your bluetooth connection -- and if a call comes in to your cell phone it is supposed to let it through and you can still answer those calls
just installing it to my own phone now (6682)
the software is free
and they are having a contest for the first couple thousand ppl to register to win a car (yes i do care what kind of car it is but i dont want to seem like i am advertising for them -- i have nothing to do with rok -- you will just have to go to their website and see what kind of car theyre offering but the hint is it is wholly contained in the name of their product)

I think this is probably one of the more worthless services out there.

Connect my PC to a broadband internet connection -> Connect My Wireless Device via Bluetooth to my PC -> Make calls via a 3rd party application's UI (not the default phone UI)

Why not save a step, and just make the call directly from your PC using Skype, and probably experience much better call quality? This application will give you a whopping 20-30 feet of "wireless freedom" - why, that's enough to walk across your living room!

I think the fact that it's pretty much tied down due it using Bluetooth, it loses all value.

My 2cents anways.

well ya maybe you can only get 30 feet -- i can double that with my multiple bluetooth connections at once

pc --> cell phone = 30 feet; cell phone ---> headset = 30 feet all together - 60 extra feet yay!

its the novelty of it -- cmon man we are tech and gadget geeks here lol

Why bother with bluetooth when I've got Wifi? Besides, what I really want is a good VOIP service that will let me call mobile to mobile without being limited to calling only people with the same program installed. Either that or someone to convince my boyfriend to switch to an S60 mobile.

When you're at home or with your PC, sure.

However when you're walking around downtown just with your handset, you can pop into (or even stand close to) a place with free Wi-Fi (e.g. Starbucks) and make free VOIP calls from cellular to cellular, as I currently do using Fring.
