Rogers now offers unlimited data

The title says it all! Rogers now offers unlimited BlackBerry data. Based on user demand and with the upcoming release of the BlackBerry Curve 2 (8320), WiFi and HSDPA, Rogers realized the need to be competitive in the market and understands how important data packages will be to consumers and business customers alike.

Rogers reserves the right to charge $7 per MB for accounts exceeding a 25MB per month bandwidth but have stated this will only be done in extreme cases where a pattern of abuse is ongoing.

A few years back, as business users jumped on the data bandwagon, unlimited plans became obsolete and data was charged on a simple package or per-use basis. With data becoming more popular among general users, business and government, a technical specialist mentioned it's time for change, Rogers Wireless understand and they wish to continue as being the leader in wireless communication by setting the bar.

2 plans are available: $60 unlimited add-on or a $90 unlimited data/voice combo package.

I applaud Rogers in their decision to set the trend in future wireless communications and plan on signing up on one of these plans. ETA on the release of the Curve 2 is Mid November -> Early December. Key benefit with the Curve 2 is access to HSDPA (when available) and fully functional WiFi.

I embedded the image details and links but as per the rules, the AntiSPAM notified me this is not possible unless my Stack Level is 2.

YAY!

i have the 60.00 plan but i'd feel more comfortable with it stated as unlimited. i know there's a 25mb cap, but if they were going to enforce it, why change the wording at all?

to sucker people in....face it....Rogers makes a huge amount of $$$$$$ on overage rates. People are more inclined to use their device a whole bunch if it says unlimited and then get dinged for hundreds of $$$$ because they didn't stick to the under 25 mb.

That sounds like the limit that Verizon puts on their "unlimited" laptop plan.

Congrats on getting the new data plan in Canada but hopefully they don't end up hurting you guys in the end with overage's.

That is such false advertising. What a load of crap. I just got off the phone with them and they said its not an unlimited plan and they will charge any thing over 25mb. I then proceed to ask why its called unlimited they said because most normal BB accounts dont exceed 3mb per month so they were comfortable calling it an unlimited plan. HOLY CRAP this is robbery. PEOPLE BEWARE THEY WILL CHARGE FOR ANYTHING OVER 25mb. I would hate to see someone stuck with all those overage charges. I also have put in a formal complaint and will follow up early monday morning. Anyone with the old double your data plans will not be affected by this change. My usage is around 45-65mb per month.

~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~ it will be differnt not worrying about what is used by the BlackBerry when they don't have a usage page to check in on your usage.
I'm around 20MB every month. See how this changes things.

"Unlimited" - 1: lacking any controls: UNRESTRICTED 2: BOUNDLESS, INFINITE 3: Not bounded by exceptions : undefined

Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary Tenth Addition

It's not an "Unlimited Data Plan", it's more truthfully and accurately a "25MB Data Plan".

Exactly....this exactly echoes my ongoing frustration with Rogers. The mentality of not being as straight forward with information as they should be. It's completely frustrating......and complete unreasonable. We live in a society where people are very much dependent on their devices and their data connections because we need to be able to access things on the fly, whether it be for businees, school (in my case) or just pure entertainment. Whatever the user's reasons for needing a data connection, there should be a priority on making data economical for the user...i understand they need to create revenue...but they create so much revenue in other ways....every month I practically get raped for international texting since my fiance lives in Europe....and right now there is no alternative means of texting the UK that is equivalent to any domestic texting plan. If any of you have any ideas on that one for me, I'd sure like to know.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I disagree with earthsfc. Customer Service are frontline when it comes to the people you should be speaking with at Rogers. You should ask to speak with someone who deals with billing and or BB technical support. Yes, in the fine print, it is a soft cap but as explained, they reserve that right and will exercise that right for the abusers who take advantage of this.

On a global scale for Canadian users, with BB compression, most people do not exceed 20MB - 25MB per month and many have tried. With release of the BB 8320 and WiFi ability, if you have access to unlimited data and WiFi capability, you have the best of both worlds! Rogers realizes with the release of a functional WiFi BB and many surrounding hotspot areas, they do not wish to lose business.

What they don't want is abuse. HSDPA is supported on the 8320 and this will provide ADSL type speeds on a simple device. I can see it now... All the cheap people cancelling their ADSL/SHAW and tethering their blackberry for data use (complete abuse) and not what it's meant for. Once in a while, a business user may do this but not on a 24/7 365 basis. This is why Rogers puts in a restriction.

As for charging $7 per MB overage, they said this will not happen unless a user completely abuses the package and takes advantage of the data spectrum.

I am trying to figure out where people are getting thier spec's from in stating that the 8320 has HSDPA? There isn't a 3g GSM bb out yet or one in the rumours to be launching anytime soon. Unless Roger's is getting a completely different 8320 than what T-Mobile just launched, they are getting a wi-fi / Edge Blackberry not HSDPA.....

this is great news,

now Bell and telus have no choice but to counter with better plans. And Rogers will be forced to counter again.

who wins, us.

~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~

They meen unlimited, as in an unlimited way to connect, wifi, gsm, gprs, edge, hsdpa.
Its just saying that in everyway possible you can connect with your BB.

I just wonder at what point they consider abuse, will it be 30 mb?

They have to have some kind of auto cap that will flag billing dept or something.
