I still think Babe Ruth was the greatest hitter in baseball history bar none but check out these stats for that 5 year period for Hornsby:

Games: 696
At Bats: 2679
Runs: 615
Hits: 1098
Doubles: 206
Triples: 66
Homers: 144
Rbi's: 598
Batting average: .400

Ty Cobb comes close. From 1908 to 1912 he did this.

Games: 732
At Bats: 2,804
Runs: 577
Hits: 1,072
Doubles: 181
Triples: 90
Homers: 36 ( Very impressive numbers considering. )
Rbi's: 516
* Steals - 324
Batting average: .382

Hornsby's best stat going there I'd say would be the great .400 avg for the 5 year period, but overall I can't look past

Lou Gehrig ('30-'34)....
Games > 771
AB > 2968
Runs > 710
Hits > 1047
2B > 196
3B > 57
Homers > 202
RBI > 813
Bat avg > .353

Jimmie Foxx ('32-'36)....
Games > 755
AB > 2817
Runs > 644
Hits > 980
2B > 163
3B > 39
Homers > 227
RBI > 720
Bat avg > .348

The only other player that could come close to Hornsby is Babe Ruth from 1920 to 1924. In that span he had 723 runs, 235 home runs, 695 RBI, .778 SLG, and .511 OBP higher than Hornsby's.
