Rock 'n' Chips - Only Fools and Horses Prequel

Should just add I thought the time and attention to detail was exceptional. Everything felt authentically 1960's from the sountrack through to the clothing through to the decor, through to the way it was shot and the colour scheme. As a period piece it was excellent - Very brave of the BBC to commit to the thing 100% and spend that much money on it given that the whole thing could so easily have turned into a disaster.
 
Don't think that this is meant to be a comedy as such. We are not getting the Del Boy that we all know and love. We are seeing how Derrick Trotter became Del Boy.

I'm enjoying this.
 
I think Kellie may be a little too young, as would Sheridan Smith.

As for the criticism of Nicholas Lyndhurst, he will probably be the only saving grace of the show. It would have been completely pointless if he wasn't involved.

After You've Gone was terrible but the majority of his career choices have been good. Goodnight Sweetheart was a great series.
 
When you put it like that it does sound bad but the actual vibe of that episode wasnt anywhere near as harsh.

Del was making a quick buck but it wasnt really at anyones expense as the German girl didnt want the baby and Boycie and Marlene were childless. You'll notice that once the girl says she wants to keep the baby he calls off the deal. Of course by that stage we are discovering that its a girl not boy (Boycie - "Typical, everything you buy off him has something missing") and it turns out the baby is black. The scene where Boycie is ranting about being able to con the world about everything except the colour of the baby is absolutely priceless and you can see everyone struggling not to laugh.

In most episodes athough Del was trying to make a quick buck at the expense of others there was never any malice in it. Even when he is making fun of Rodney or whoever. The scene at dinner in a Royal Flush is very different and he just comes over as a drunken unlikable oaf.Im guessing thats wasnt characteristics that Sullivan wanted to portray especially in the original with no laughter track.
 
Very good in my opinion and it was left wide open with lots more to come hopefully. After about 20 minutes Nick Lyndhurst became Freddie the Frog and I forgot about Rodders.

Well done to JS it was well written and I liked the fact it didn't go for out and out comedy and was a comedy drama.
 
Exactly so imagine the clumsy re-editing being done on the day of transmission (xmas day iirc) because eveyone knows that Del is always after making a quick buck but it always went t*ts up, but the scene in "a royal flush" is just wrong
 
As prequels go it was very good.
The comedy drama format that was used as opposed to the sitcom format they might have used worked much better, had it been played for laughs with the new cast doing impersonations of original cast it would have failed I think.

Also having the story based on Reg, Joan and Freddie (omg thats a bit Rainbowish) instead of Del and his mates worked better.

I enjoyed it, but I can't agree with what some have said about it becoming a regular series, yes it has potential, but we all know the history, Reg buggers off, Joan Dies and Freddie does a job that goes wrong and dies also. That story can continue in a couple more specials but no more than that.

I've been a fan of Kellie Bright ever since she was in The upper hand and I really enjoyed her in this, also I quite like Phil Daniels too.
