Robert E. Lee...?

I am doing a power point on Robert E. Lee and his life. I have learned about him briefly in the past, but remember not so much. I have read many biographies on him, but the info seems so unorganized and scattered. I have to sum up his involvement in the Civil War and why the South and North wanted him as their main general. Why did he fight for the South? Can you sum up his military prowess in a paragraph or two?

I missed a couple days of class due to illness and this is due this morning. I'm desperate...very desperate. Help is much appreciated
 
A nice footnote: as the toll of war mounted, Lincoln asked Montgomery Meiggs (check that spelling) to find a site for a new military cemetery.

Meiggs hated Lee and all he stood for, so chose the site of Lee's ancestral home as a place to bury the northern dead - and so Arlington Cemetery came to be.

Oh; another anecdote. At the battle of Spotsylvania Lee ordered a counter-attack and proposed to lead it himself. His men refused point blank to advance until Lee had withdrawn to a safer area in the rear.
