Road Glide...Ultra or Custom???

Thought about a month ago that Harley had invented, in the words of Windows 7, "that was my idea", my ultimate bike...the Road Glide Ultra. I have really liked the look of the RG's , but thought I wanted a setup like an Ultra Classic, or so I thought. Getting close to 40, wife and I thinking about having kids in the next couple of years, wife is riding her own bike now, I thought it was the bike for me. That is until I test rode an '11 Street Glide (only bike with the 103 that the dealer had). Now, I have to admit that the RG Custom would be nice, not having to do that funny, awkward, dance to get on a bike with a touring pak every time I want to go for a ride, but for esentially $1,800 dollars difference in price, with the options I want, not sure what to do. RG Custom is hot looking and more my speed for my mostly around town driving. On the other hand, if we have kids, wife sells her 1200 Custom and rides with me...hell, I am really having a tough time trying to decide between the two + we are planning to ride from KY to FL in late September (if one or both of the bikes becomes available before we leave). Inputs welcome, and thanks for reading!!

Get the fully decked out ultra, you can always take the tour pack off and the lowers and hang em on the wall, course you don't get the custom rear end, decisions decisions ahh what the hell get the custom!

Funny dance because of the tour pac??? Never seen that one.: I just step over on my UC (and I'm only 5'8").
I don't see why your wife would quit riding her own and start riding on the back because of kids?

FWIW Many people find that they don't ride as much (especially long trips) when they have young children.

I would get the Ultra. As said in one of the posts above you can always take off (get quick detach hardware) the tour pac & lowers although, if you keep the tour pac on few months, chances are you wont want to be without it!

Like I've said before, I started with a E-glide Standard, turned it into an Ultra, at the cost of a SE Ultra, with the resale/trade-in value of a Standard!

I'll do things diffrently next time! LOL!

I just bought the 10 Custom and ordered the tour-pak with smoked lights, speakers etc. It's detachable and I'm getting another detachable backrest incase we decide to ride without the trunk. Saved me thousands to get the 10 and equip it close to the same as opposed to buying the 11.

Have you seen the cost of kids clothes, family plan medical care, not to mention college..? (Now you have to set up a "fund" when they are in K1)...maybe you better look at a sporty...just sayin'

I am glad my kids are grown $$ now, though they still need a loan from time to time.

I'd get the Ultra - as others have already said, you can always take the tour-pak and lowers off if you want to ride it "naked", you'll have all the goodies, and the 103, and the re-sale down the road will be higher.
