Rita, Sue & Bob Too

a great film but one of those films you either get or don't.

I mentioned a film on here not so long ago called The Arbor. It's a documentary/film based around the tragic life of Andrea Dunbar, who wrote Rita and Sue. I haven't seen it yet but it's supposed to be a great film.

It is a raw, earthy, very funny film, a satire on Thatcher's Britain.

After the collapse of the British economy during 1979 and 1982 the gap between the classes started to get wider and this clearly shows in this film as the raw earthiness of the Bradford Council Estate is laid bare for all to see.

A film for our time, which will still be enjoyed by many for years to come.

Michelle Holmes has come a long way since those days of course, I have always enjoyed watching her act. Saw her in Heartbeat recently and she looked fantastic.

I think all the women in the film look far older than their years. I always thought the actresses that played Rita & Sue looked too old to be schoolgirls but they were only 18 and 19 at time of release, probably a year younger when it was filmed. Lesley Sharp was only 21, dunno how old her character is supposed to be but she looks much older.

I don't think that I have seen much of Siobhan Finneran (Rita) in anything else on TV so I like to think that her character Janice Garvey in Benidorm is Rita 20 odd years later.
