Hi
First post sorry if its a bit long.

Well, from my front drivers side wheel there was a knocking sound so jacked the car up and found that the tyre was wobbly/moving, Took it to the garage and they said its the bearings so got them done. The guy who got the job didn’t really look like he knew what he was doing and it took him 3 hours. Waiting around in the cold for those 3 hours just forgot to check the tyre when he was done, but paid and left, it drove perfectly until 3 weeks later, same noise same wobbly tyre, took it back again and he said its the bearing (they cant go in 3 weeks can they) got them done but this time I checked the tyre after he put the bearings in and still it was wobbling so he put another two bearings in but still not fixed in the end. He started telling me its cv joint and quoted me over £100 which at that point I told him I was leaving but he wanted money for labour which I didn’t agree with but ended up paying him £20 as my car wasn’t put back together.

I then went to another mechanic he told me it’s the hub, he seemed like he knew what he was talking about so got the work done from him. He fixed the problem in half an hour the following day after getting me the part.

I went back to the first garage to get my money back but he wouldn’t give me nothing because he said I bought the car back too late, bearings cant go in 3 weeks but I didn’t probably need bearings in the first place and also said that he wasn’t an magician so couldn’t have known it was the hub lol.

Am I right to ask for money back as my car had unnecessary work carried out on and who do I make an complaint about this place too, also found out the mechanic who carried out the work was unqualified.

Don’t really want them to know its me who made the complaint so is there anyone who can receive my complaint and inspect if they are doing a good job also don’t really give a damn about the money just want someone to get those unqualified mechanics out before someone has an accident.

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Your old bearings wore out but you ignored the symptoms for so long they cut into the hub, thus making it impossible to seat the new bearings. That is why they wore out in 3 weeks. Ideally the hub should have been replaced at the initial service but the damage is not always obvious.

in the usa you could take him to small claims court...get paper from 2nd mechanic on what real problem was...hope 1st guy gave you [and u saved] good paperwork describing problem and repairs..we also can complain to state attorney general/consumer affairs dept and the better business bureau

they can go bad if they are,nt put in right. if they get them cockeyed then they will go out. now you know why i don,t like those so called mechanics. if they are going into that business then they need to know what they are talking about. see your attorney and see what your chances are about getting your money back. if you have no luck then tell them your going to put their name in every newspaper you can. they won,t like that. it looses business.
