We knew this was coming, but it still hits you like a ton of bricks to see it actually happen. After a price cut, down to a measly $199 for a short time, and unlocked with no strings or contracts attached, the 8GB Nexus has been marked as out of inventory on Google Play. And it’s not coming back.
When the 8GB Nexus 4 first debuted, a very vocal minority trashed it as a terrible move on Google’s part. They said that 8GB of storage wasn’t nearly enough without microSD expansion, that it wouldn’t sell, and that Google should have made a 32GB option instead. Well, look at it now.
The 8GB Nexus 4, much like the 8GB Nexus 7, helped push the Nexus name forward. The extra storage was unnecessary for a lot of people. Producing inexpensive 8GB models made both devices much more accessible at the time. Now that Google has access to cheaper memory, storage will rise and prices will stay the same.
The 8GB Nexus 4 played a vital role during its lifespan. But it’s time to get ready for better things. Starting as far back as March, we’ve been hearing that Motorola is working on a Nexus device. We’ve yet to see a lot of solid evidence for this device, but it may be hiding in plain sight. The Motorola DVX is a low cost version of the Moto X, which features a removable back. The DVX has been confirmed by Dennis Woodside, and will come in at around $200 off-contract. We’ve heard that the DVX is going through internal testing now, which means a launch could be right around the corner. There’s a good chance the DVX could turn out to be the 2013 Nexus 4.
With the 8GB Nexus 4 already discontinued and the 16GB right behind it, we should know more about the next Nexus any day now.
