Right Rib Pain

Hello everyone!

I am a 24 year old male who drank off and on from the time I was 19 up until recently. I did binge drink (whiskey) alot on weekends the past year. I have recently been able cut my alcohol consumpsion down to three or four beers every two or three days. I have had what doctors say is hemroids for the past 9-10 months...I have not been able to get totally rid of them. I do not have any blood in my stools but around the "hemroids" I do.

I have been having right rib pain for about 6-8 months now. It is not constant but it is a shooting pain. I dont feel it in my back, just in my lower rib cage area. It only happens every now and then. It does seem to be worse the day after I drink my beer or if I have a head ache and take a tylonol. I have had blood work done and it came back okay. My chest x-ray came out good.

What could it be? I am at a loss with the whole situation.
Someone please help.

Thanks,
John

I know you mentioned it's in your rib area, but could it actually be your stomach? The stomach is up higher than most realize. And if you had some issues in the past with binge drinking, especially "hard" liquor, such as whiskey, you could have a mild ulcer. That would absolutely cause sharp pains and even the occasional burning sensation, in just the area you mention.

I wouldn't worry too much about the hemmorhoids. They are quite common and some are more prone to them than others. There are several creams and treated pads (one is called called Tucks) that you can get over the counter, that will help give you relief from any pain or itching. It's also common for them to bleed a bit from time to time, especially after a bowel movement or wiping. Using the Tucks when you wipe will help.

If you can, see if you can get your doc to order a scope (upper GI endoscopy). This test would show any irritation or ulcers, if they are present. Honestly, it could also be just run of the mill gas pains. Get yourself some Gas-Ex or Phazyme (also over the counter) and the next time you have this pain, take some and see if it helps.

Best of luck.

My concern is, why would this pain increase (or have more of them) when I take a tylonol or the next day after I drink a few beers? The pain is right below my right chest area in my rib cage.

I also have a pain in my lower right rib cage area, which I had for 5 years before a doctor diagnosed it as a neuralgia (nerve pain). Lyrica and gabapentin are pills normally used to treat neuralgias, but they didn't work for me. I found that Lidoderm patches work great for it though. I have to use 3 patches, one where the pain is located, and 2 following the nerve back around to my spine. I can finally get through work without it annoying me.

History of the pain...
comes on randomly, usually with mental stress at work and while driving. Unresponsive to tylenol, ibuprofen, nabumetone, effexor (don't ask), lyica, amitriptyline, and gabapentin.
