Rider Down

I wish this guy a fast recovery...very sad to know that no protective gear was worn.

I keep telling people who think i'm a girlie man for wearing it that if they can absolutely guarantee that i will never come off a bike then i won't wear any but until then, live and let live.

Here in the desert it does get too hot to ride so i take the opportunity to strip my bike and do some mods whilst it's out of action.

I'm originally from Oz and have been in the US for 5 years and cannot believe that some states do not require helmets...it's mandatory everywhere in Australia...unless you live with the aborigines.
 
That's because there are more stupid people in the US, and they have concentrated themselves in certain states, and their collective stupidity has allowed them to influence safety regulations in a very stupid way.

But, you know what?
They have the choice to be stupid, and they display that stupidity with fervor.

That includes Colorado, where I live, and ride.
Luckily, I wear ATGATT.

I'm part of the trauma team too here in CA. Saw a young guy today come in from a crash, not that bad, but he wasn't wearing any gear, rashed everywhere.

In the last year though I have seen some really bad ones, especially a guy who t-boned a car while riding and it ripped his leg off and hip socket off. Many other bad stories as well that I will spare you from, but it is definitely a reminder to me whenever I see one. Most people in the ED that do traumas are against motorcycles too just for this reason. Just like guns, motorcyles don't kill people, irresponsible riders and other drivers kill riders.
 
As I've always said, you don't have to be smart to ride a motorbike. Sounds like the kid should have died out their on the tarmac. I'm shocked with so much injury he is still alive at all! If your not smart enough to wear a helmet (how do people see without them?) and you drink right before riding, you pretty much deserve to die if you crash.

Even the best, most well equipped riders, still suffer catastrophic injury. Heck, I have friends who have seen it all. Guys in full leathers, chest/back protectors, full helmet, everything and they still die from a small crash that didn't even break a bone! I lost a friend from a crash at a track where his head just tapped the tarmac and that was it, lights out. So sure, riding gear might have saved this kid, but just because your well equipped, doesn't mean your invincible.

ATGATT is great, but its not a cure for the ever so common poor rider...
 
My friend's son has gone against the parents wishes and bought a learner's bike - now he's got the bike we're educating him with safety advice - top of the list is ATGATT!
 
I ware a helmet and gloves. I have a nice leather jacket and pants hanging on my door 9 months out of the year.....reading stuff like this makes me want to slap myself.

Wow, I really need to start waring them.
 
I have to use the old saying....."better to wear it and not need it than to need it and not wear it" (of course this can be taken many different ways)...
