Riddle - Why Did He Do It?

A man, tattered and wearing a dirty life-preserver, walks into a dinner and ask for a bowl of Crane soup. The man at the dinner gives him the soup and asks if he's okay. The tattered man looks at the soup, eats a spoonful, then takes out a gun and shoots himself. why?

The object of the "riddle" is to figure out the correct back story to the information given. You know it has to do with the sea (the life-preserver)
 
He lost his pet crane, who he loved at sea and came into the diner after searching in vain for his crane.
He orders the soup after thinking about his crane and after he tastes it he kills himself because the taste reminds him of his pet crane..........
idk?
 
because he was going to die anyways, and always wanted to try this soup so now that he did, he can die...
gosh i know that's wrong hahahah
 
hes a lighthouse keeper but didnt do his job or did it wrong causing an accident and he wanted to kill himself but before he died he wanted to try Crane soup
