to leave the ocean? And what did it mate with? And when it mated did the baby breathe air or did it have gills?

That must have been one crazy day the day that a fish thought hey, i'll leave the safety of the water and lay down on the burning sand for a bit. Oh! Here's another fish with the same idea. Let's make love on the beach and start a new species of air breathing, non-walking fish. Good story bro.

oh geez i dunno... maybe because they needed a better food source, temperature changes, blah blah blah

Ever hear of a lungfish? How about a mudskipper? These are fish that can leave the water temporarily, and even move about on land without any sort of legs or feet. And, yes, they have gills--and they are far from the only fish that can breathe without using their gills. For details on this, go to an aquarium shop and find somebody working in the freshwater section. They'll point you to many widely-avaiable species that can do so.

If there are no animals on the land, then there are no predators. That's make the ability to get out of the water an advantage over fish who can't leave. Plus, a fish can flop to another nearby stream, pond, or tidepool for food.
