Riddle Help?

When Inspector Winter slammed on the brakes, Haledjian would have likely been pitched out the windshield if not for his seatbelt.
The reason for the sudden stop was horribly evident.
A red sports car had come racing around the hairpin turn on the mountain road ahead. Out of control, the car crashed into the guardrail.
The impact didn't stop the car, but it flung the driver straight up. He almost seemed to hang in the air for a moment before plummeting downward out of sight.
Haledjian and Winter scrambled down the two-hundred foot precipice.
The driver's body was a shattered mass of broken bones and blood. About a hundred feet beyond, the sports car lay on its side, a total wreck.
"Strange," muttered the inspector, pointing to the seat belt, obviously unused, which lay in the fresh blood covering the front seat.
"I doubt a seat belt would've saved his life," said Haledjian.
Do you think he fell asleep at the wheel?"
"No," said Haledjian. "He was murdered."
