What is soft as silk when you touch it, but hard as rock when you hit it?

It can be crystal clear, or dark as pitch.

It can be quiet and peaceful, or loud and roaring.

What is it?
would you guys really like to know?
 
Ummm.... I don't know. This is a good one. Will you tell us? If I had to guess, I would say a wall? It can be soft when you touch it, but when you hit it, you'd break your fist. It's usually dark, and its usually quiet and peaceful. I don't know... tell us the answer!
 
I'm guessing it's water, but since you said it's pretty hard, it's probably not water and you know that what we'll think it is. :)
