ricky gervais just not funny

Nope it is true.

Smarmy, self-indulgent tripe, starring a smarmy, self indulgent fat man, that tries sooooo hard to be 'uber satire' and fails in the most painful and clumsy way

Not clever enough to be funny, not funny enough to be clever...

...mind you what do I know, I used to laugh at Cannon and Ball

He does have limitations as a performer.

At the Diana concert he died on his arse. When he did the "Little Fat Man" song it was not funny. Why? Because although it was Gervais (and Marchant) who wrote it, it was Bowie singing it that made it funny.
Likewise Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen's delivery is what makes their cameos in Extras so hilarious.

As a writer he if often superb, as a performer he excels at playing tactless losers. Andy Millman is simply Brent without the ego.

His stand up often relies too much on "outrageousness", I think one of his most brilliant jokes was his observations on the nursery rhyme "Humpty Dumpty".
 
I thought his first 2 stand-ups were humorous, didn't mind 'the Office' but thought his role in 'extras' was far too similar and then I saw that godawful episode of 'The Simpsons', he basically played himself yet again and Matt Greoning insists he should write more episodes.
 
But I find the same thing with some huge American actors like Robert De Niro and Jack Nicholson. I fully believe them as the characters they play, but they always come across as the same type of character even in very different types of films: Meet the Parents, Casino and The Untouchables for De Niro and One Flow Over the Cuckoos Nest, Batman and A Few Good Men for Nicholson are all played the same.
 
Personally, I think the trendiest thing concerning Ricky Gervais this year involves the people who feel they have to shout from the rooftops about how much they don't find him funny.
 
Whether someone or some thing is funny is an individual thing and differs from one person to another.

What I find depressing at the moment about comedy in general is the repetitive nature of the scetches.
Many of the series today take what imho should probably be a one off sketch "and very funny" into a continuing theme.

Maybe its me or my age but I tired very easily with
Harry EnfielRAB "only me" character"
The fast show with Suit you sir
Vikky PollarRAB yeah but no but etc etc.

Series I avoided like the plague based on previews were

The Office "I worked in one so its all true but boring to me"
Mrs Merton "Yawn"
and the number one unfunny guy well imho its Steve Coogan.

Plenty of comedy I do like its just none of the above.
 
His brand of humor isn't for everyone. In my opinion, he mistakes making people uncomfortable with comedy.

Which, to be honest, seems to be very common for british humor. At least that's the impression held by this american.

My wife can't watch him at all... for much the same reason she can't watch shows like American Idol. Watching people make asses of themselves is torture for her.
 
I haven't seen him in any films, but the 2 main TV series that he did - The Office and Extras - were both brilliant. I think his writing and directing are superb, and he's a talented comedy character actor IMO.

That statement is factually incorrect. Whether you like the guy or not, The office was a success.
 
simply answer yes, I belive so. he just trendy at the moment and it cool to say you like him. Same as so called Hollywood actors have got in on the act saying they want to work with him.

The Office is cringing because it's what it is like in that environment, well ok back in the day, maybe you go getter's are not quite like that anymore:D

I'm not about to split hairs with you, shirty boy!!

As humour is personal and subjective, maybe the poster felt that to him, The Office was a failure as a comedy, as it obviously didn't make him laugh.

Furthermore the poster doesn't actually state that The Office was a commercial failure, which is what you have alluded to. He said it failed as a comedy

And I agree, it wasn't funny.

At all.
