My wife and I are planning a 2-week road trip from St. Louis to Yellowstone NP and back through various other parks. We will probably be hitting Yellowston on or around October 1st and staying there a minimum of 3 nights.
I'm interested in hearing from other people who have *actually been there* around this same time - the 1st week of October, give or take a few days.
I've done a lot of resarch and reading on the subject already, so at this point I'm really only interested in actual first-hand accounts of being there that time of year. General sources are too, well, general.
Specifically - how crowded can we expect it to be at that time? How is the camping in regards to the need for reservations in advance, cool at night it will be, if we should really worry about road-closing snows already, etc.
We'll be traveling in a 4wd VW pop-top camper, so some bad roads are OK and restrictions such as the "hard sided camping unit" rules won't apply. Should I be packing my tire chains and snatch-straps, or maybe a midget to snack on Donner Party style should we get stuck and snowed in for the whole winter? lol

thanks all!
