I enjoyed the film - some of the husband / wife squabbling was reminiscent of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? 
I haven't read the novel, but I can't belive that 1950's America was so affluent that a young couple with two children living on one income in a posh suburb could save enough to be able to live for six months!
Maybe I'm taking it too literaly, but from the standpoint of Britain today, I thought Blimey!
I can only imagine this was part of April's fantasising - like getting a secretarial job in Paris without any evidence of skills or experience
