I like the clean/dirty idea magnet idea. With just me and my wife at home,
it is usually a day or two before we fill the washer up. Many times we will
turn it on at night before bedtime. Sometimes my daughter will drop by and
maybe the teenage grandson. They may put something in the washer. My wife
usually puts a roll of paper towels over the washer door when the dishes are
being washed and clean.

How many people are there in your house that you have to such a thing? It's a
simple thing even for teenagers, open the door and if they see dirty dishes,
then they can put their dirty dishes in to be washed. Even when the kids were
young, they put their dirty dishes on the counter and we loaded it. My wife
and I are the only two who put the loads through so once it's washed we unload,
empty dishwasher means ready to load.

I hate even pausing it for fear of water shooting out. ;-)
I don't do it very often either. Maybe when I remember to throw in
the kitchen sponge.

Huh! Mine doesn't close tightly unless I push it to that point;
otherwise, the door is closed, but will open without releasing some sort
of locking mechanism. Maytag. About 8-10 years old, I think.

No arguments in my house. I could hide a million dollars in there &
nobody would find it. Clean dishes are in the cupboard. dirty
ones go in the sink. Dad moves them around sometimes.

I swear I'm the only one that has the secret handshake to open the DW
door.

Maybe that's the easy way.

If I did that, the water still sloshing around would
(and frequently does) splash out on the floor. No, I
don't have the patience to wait till the sloshing stops
before I open the door.

My indicator is whether the inside surface of the door
is soiled or clean. If it has any soil at all on it,
the washer hasn't been run.

Not really. Since I'm the only one who ever lifts a finger in the
kitchen, I usually load the machine right after meals, but if I'm
interrupted, they'll wait till I get around to it.

Nope. I 'do' dishes at 5am. By the time I have more, the washer
is ready to be emptied. Dinner dishes go in the sink-- and I'm not
in the kitchen until 5am the next day. . . and we repeat.

Sometimes I do 2 loads in a day- but it is rare. If I'm in the
kitchen I'm cooking, not looking into the sink.

I noticed. If I'd known we were racing I'd've put on my moves.

Is that speculation or do you know of some?

I know someone who often can't figure out if the dishes are
clean or dirty and my stock answer is, "Look at them. If there's stuff
on them, they're dirty; if three or four look like they've been washed,
they're probably clean. Live dangerously. Take a chance."

Not in my house! I am not one who empties the dishwasher right away. And I
have been known to open it and take one item out. However the chances are
if the dishes look clean and it is mostly full, it has been run. If it is
partially filled with dirty dishes, it hasn't been run.

TSP sounds like a good idea. You're probably putting in a whole lot more
phosphates than the old formula detergents ever had. OTOH, that's not
being very green.

OTOH, just as long as everybody else is not doing this, I suppose you
and I can do it with very little environmental impact. My guess is that
this would work great with the laundry too.

Thanks for the tip. :-)

My dishwasher has a light that comes on when drying is complete. So, I
know I must empty the thing before putting in more dishes.
