Retro Futures

I'm doing some work on films which deal with retro futures . The ones which come to mind are Jeunet & Caro's films such as Amelie/Delicatessen/City of The Lost Children, Alex Proyas Dark City, Bladerunner, Brazil etc. Can anyone think of any other old or contemporary American/European ones?

Retro futures? Hmm... I think you'd better coin a better term than that if you are going to do any research - academia is a bit of a misery guts like that ;) :D

You're talking about Dystopian futuristic sci-fi movies, with retrospective design I take it. If that's the case then try looking at a few of these:

Metropolis (1927) - Good starting block.
A.I (2001) - film sucks, but everything is in there.
Robocop (1987) - very subtle, but some good material to look at if you look hard.
Alien (1979)/Aliens (1986) - again, it's subtle, but in there.
Strange Days (1995) - not my favourite film ever, but pretty much what you are looking for

Hope some of that helps...

BTTF2 is an interesting one - it was meant to be ultra modern, but it looks a very dated ultra modern now, so kind of has that 'retro' edge...

Can't believe I forgot to mention 'The Fifth Element' - some very retro design in there!

I saw the the 4 hour version of Metropolis with a live organ accompaniment a few years back... Brilliant, and I'm glad I did it, but not something I'd care to repeat in a hurry. ;)

Sleeper - Woody Allen?
