respiratory illness in my rat?

so i was reading around because my rat seems to be sick
he has lost alot of weight
is not eating
doesnt move around much
but he still loves to sit on my lap
he had pine shavings in his cage because the dam pet shop lady told me it was okay
but i replaced it with newspaper
so i think he picked up an illness from that
and i read to give them a small amount of amoxicillin three times daily
i have given him a dose tonight but im now wondering if it is safe for him
i do not have money for the vet so please dont suggest that
thanks

Black tea, not too strong and do NOT add milk or sugar, make sure it's slightly warm but not hot, it's great for rodents with colds and such (I've done it for my rats and hamsters in the past and it's fine) Trust me, it's great for them!

Clean his cage more often than usual (so he has a good clean environment) and use a good, safe bedding (carefresh or aspen for example), make sure he drinks plenty, give him chocolate and make sure he eats some (it helps with breathing problems) and hope that he pulls through it. I don't know about the medicine, but i'm sure someone else will tell you whether that is safe or not. newspaper isn't the best because i think the inks in it can make them sick. I understand you don't have money for the vet (vets can charge outrageous amounts of money for rats, mine charges ten times the cost of the rat itself), so you need to try to do everything else you possibly can to help. Make sure he eats too, you can smear small amounts of peanutbutter on food (too much can make them choke but they love the taste so it can encourage eating) to see if he will eat it.
