Researching for Poverty Debate Issue?

I have recently taken an interest in my school's Debate Team. However, this being my first real experience of debating, I am completely and utterly lost, especially in researching the topic.

The topic (already resolved), revolves around increasing social services for those stricken by poverty.

My troubles lay in finding reliable sources regarding this debate topic.

If anyone is knowledgable regarding this topic, please lead me in the right direction. I'm asking for any links, authors, books, etc. that might help me in my first year.

NOTE: Please don't give me useless, obscure answers. Especially "Google it". Don't do it, thank you.

I thank anyone in advance for contributing to my question
Please do not misunderstand my question.

It is not that I am not doing any work. In fact, I take several hours everyday to read on debate.

However, this being my first year, I need a helping hand to point me in the right direction.

Your school's debate team must have an adviser who can point you in the right direction. Yahoo Q&A is the very LAST place you should be asking for advice of this nature. Too many bias people with their own twisted agenda here. Example: The links above from the Heritage Foundation are ultra-conservative think tank generated.

I'm going to link you to two articles. One talks about income mobility and shows that those who are in poverty generally aren't 10 years later.

The other talks about what poverty in America really is. Basically, most poor people in America have plenty to eat, a 2 bedroom apartment, heat, AC, power, hot and cold running water, TVs, cable or satellite, electronics, a car, etc. Many even own their own homes.

Funny, but when I think of poverty, I think of a family living in a mud hut somewhere and they get their water from a village well and have dirt streets with sewer running down it. Poverty in America is quite a different thing!
