Replacing gravel with sand in cycled 10g tank?

Right now I have a 10 gallon tank that's been up and running for almost 8 months. It has 4 female bettas, one otocinclus, and numerous live plants (only two have root systems digging into the gravel). I've been wanting to replace the gravel with sand for quite some time now, but I'm not sure if it is okay to do so. If I replace the gravel, will my plants, decorations and filter be enough to keep the tank balanced?

What would be the best way to go about this? Can I just pour sand over the gravel, or remove most of the gravel, add sand, and mix in the gravel that I've saved? Also, is there a specific type or brand of sand that I should use for this?

Thanks in advance.
