Replacing exterior door handles on a 1973 chevy c-10 truck?

Does anybody knows or has anybody replaced the exterior door handles on a 1973-1987 c-10 trucks, I my self is restoring a 1973 chevy truck and the guy who's painting it is having a hard time taking the door handles off, once he unscrew the bolts that hold the handle there is a metal rod holding it but it seems impossible to get to the other end of that rod. there is no room to even get your hand in there, I know there is a way to do it because when i bought the new handles which are nice and shiny the new handle does not come with any rods attached to it. But the rod has a head on the top that is also not allowing it to come free. So anyway the truck is getting everything new and i will also like to get the new door handles on there, if anybody knows or have done this before please let me know or if there is a diagram on the web that you know of and i could go and get an idea how to do it please let me know thanks
 
There is a small metal or plastic clip that holds the rod in place, it is difficult to get to, if you unhook it from the door latch assembly it's easier to get to, you can take the latch off by undoing the 3 bolts and this will give you some more free play to work with.
