Repaint my classic car help please?

so i dont want to sand down the WHOLE thing, can i just lightly sand and primer that?
it has like 4 coats til metal, i dont want to sand through that
i have to paint it my self its a senior project
 
Do you mean - do you have to sand the entire car down to bare metal? No, that is not necessary. However, lines in the layers of paint might show through. you will have to sand several times, with increasing fineness of sandpaper.

But you will have to sand the entire car, yes. Any smooth surface will reject a new coat of paint adhering to it. Sanding roughs up the surface to allow fresh paint to cling.
 
Let a professional shop paint it. If you don't know how much to sand it, you won't be able to paint it properly. And to repair what ever you put on it will only cost more in the long run.

Edit: If you HAVE to paint it, the final sanding is going to depend on what brand and type of paint your going to use. Manufacturers vary on what they want they're base coat over. Some say nothing coarser that 600P and others say 400P. Then there is single stage that will almost go over anything. Best bet is middle ground and go with 400P. To speed the sanding, use a guide coat. This is a light coat of a lacquer paint that you sand completely off. A can of SEM bumper black works great for this. That way you know for sure that the entire car is sanded and the paint will stay adhered.
