Today, I went to fill out an application for a rental property, through a family owned business, in Jacksonville, NC. I am currently collecting Unemployment, and I have proof of my income. The people at the rental office refused to take my application, based on the fact that I am collecting Unemployment. (not based on my income) she wouldn't even look at it, cause she told me that they don't accept anyone who collects unemployment.
I feel discriminated. & I was wondering if this was even legal?

& Sean; First of all, I don't plan on sueing, just asking if it were legal. & I make WAY more money than any job will pay down here on unemployment. I'm collecting from NY, & I have it for 2 years. & it's not like I'm not looking for a job. I just can't seem to find one, that pays enough. I don't think it's right for people to be looked down on, just because of the fact that they might collect unemployment.
I understand the idea on needing to have enough income to be rented to. & I do meet those requirements, I don't think it should matter where the income comes from, as long as it's there. My point to this, is they completely wouldn't even LOOK at the application, because I told her I have unemployment. & yes, you can collect in another state, for unemployment.
