Ren & Stimpy -- one of the greatest of all time?

I also think that making smart jokes involving actually listening and paying attention to what's going on rather than watching stretching faces for 25 minutes straight takes some form of talent.

I did not EVER say what you're implying.

You know how many of my favorite cartoons are written by non cartoonists? Most of them.

But in my eyes Ren and Stimpy is very very special, because it was the first in a LONG time that was ONLY written by cartoonists, thus lending a more unpredictable and visual free for all to what you were seeing. Some cartoony visual jokes you just CAN'T type up on a computer.

You can have very funny jokes, very clever jokes, but the explosion of visual creativity that is Ren and Stimpy comes through mainly because every single human being who worked on it was a cartoonist, and they were all competing to put in the funniest looking drawings possible. For me it's a funny visual feast.

Sorry, R&S has always felt style over substance to me and probably always will. To me, you need something more than creative animation to make your show good. While John K has an interesting style, I've never enjoyed a single thing he has ever done.

Let's go back to your post

You not only gave Ren and Stimpy a distinction it does not have (The Flintstones and Yogi Bear were TV cartoons written by storyboard artists and not scripts. Hell, there were probably a bunch of 80's cartoons that used storyboards), but the tone of your post strong implies that cartoons with writer input are somehow intrinsically inferior to cartoons with no input by anyone but cartoonists.

And by cartoonist, what are we even talking about? Storyboard artists? people not in tune with the Simpsons/Family Guy/Animaniacs style of cartoon? Not every cartoon where storyboards and artists are king is a hit, you know.

I'm sorry, its just that when I hear this oft-repeated, elitist fallacy lionizing a not-infallible group of animation people over another, I want to scram.
 
Have you seen "Son of Stimpy" and "Stimpy's Fan Club"? I wouldn't classify either of those as style over substance. In fact, they have -both- at the same time.
 
Doesn't some shows on Cartoonetwork use storyboarders as their writers as well?

I remember in Billy & Mandy seeing a lot of artists also being the main writers for the show. I'm sure there were other shows, but B&M just seems to be the only one that comes to mind.
