So I need to replace the fuel level sending unit on my 1998 Ford F150, and I figure that it will be easier to remove the bed and access it from the top than to go through removing the gas tank. Any advice on how to remove the bed?

If you have an engine hoist you can use it to lift the bed off the frame enough to do what you need. Just hook a chain in all 4 corners of the bed and remove the bolts from inside the bed.Use the hoist to lift the bed slowly and get the clearance you need. This is the easiest way to do it in my opinion I have done several like this and it is easier than dropping the tank.

There's going to be about 6 to 8 bolts on the bed. You need to get underneath the truck to unbolt them and pop em out. You have to unhook all your lights on the bed and unbolt the gas tank filler pipe on top.
