Removing Rust from a Bicycle Chain?

My sister is an idiot and doesn't take care of her brand new bike, she let its chain get all rusty! How can I get the rust off of it so I can lube it?
I know the lube is self cleaning and usually cleans the chain off, will this take off the rust? Because I always apply lube, wipe it all off ('cause it cleans the chain) then add a little more and wipe off the excess (as instructed) but don't know if it'll get the rust off...
