I have solved a lot of issues with my things with this forum, truly a great place. Usually just searching solves my problem but not this time so this is why i am posting.
After updating the smart card on our 5900 the remote stoped working (well it works if you hold it right next to the receptor thing on the unit) So I bought another remote and it does the same thing....
Is it the unit that is screwy? I dont have the uhf antena at the back is this the problem?

Help please
Getting up every 5 minutes is getting anoying

Thank in advance
Stephany

I'm surprised it worked at all without the antenna!
I don't know if it will work, but try hooking up a jumper cable (any spare cable, like the one you would use to go from the 5900 to the tv)
If that doesn't work, try online to get a replacement antenna(kijiji/craigslist/ebay/etc...)
Good luck

Its weird because we have had this receiver for 5 years and it always worked without the antena. It did not come with one.

Could it be the little clear round things at the front of the receiver? Do those burn out?

The 5900 remote is both IR and UHF capable.

You do not need the UHF antenna if you are using the IR (line of sight) portion of the remote, and in fact can use an IR only remote if desired.

It sounds to me like the IR functions are no longer working and you are using the UHF functions and that is why proximity to the plug/(missing) antenna is required. Since you replaced the remote already, it is likely the receptor in the PVR. They can 'burn out' as you say, but it is rare for this type of part to die.

It would seem unlikely that this is related to the card swap, although I did have a unit (3100) die (no longer aquires signal) upon activation of the new card.

Although unlikely to help, do a reset (push and hold the front panel power button about 10 seconds - until the red and green LEDs come on) and also try reprogramming the remote ID. You never know, could just need clearing/reseting to get your IR functions back.

IF you're using IR, you may wish to be aware of the following issue regarding IR interference. Do you have an LCD? Is it new?:

Thanks for all the tips everyone.

Did the reset and the remote id but did not change anything. Tried most of the thing on the sticky for receivers did not work either.
I do not have an lcd just a plain old tv and nothing new has been added to the house since the problem started. We live in the middle of nowhere so neighbor interference is unlikely.
Funny thing is it also cannot seem to get a phone signal in the diagnostic even thought the line is fine.
Tried the lenght of coaxial on the port for the antena and that did not work.
So if i get this antenna thing it should resolve my problem?
I will bring it to a friends house on the weekend and test it there. He has an antenna on his so we can test it out.
Hmm maybe its time for a new receiver...

Borrow his Remote first.

See if that works, just make sure it has the same address.

From what you say, I do not think the antenna will fix the problem.

Have you bought a new tv ? Many people have problem with their remotes when they upgrade to new HD TV. In that case you will have to keep the receiver away from tv , or keep it inside cabinet under your tv. Having antena in the back of the receiver also helps the remote work better.

From what I know the 5900 was always UHF, not IR!!!

If you look at the back of the remote is says UHF PRO, not IR/UHF PRO remote like on the 9200/9242 remote 2.

The original remote that came with it says ir/uhf on it. Bought a new one that says the same thing. Both of them work but only if put directly to touching the receiver.

Another example of Bell's training...I was told 5900 were UHF only!!!

Since I recently sold my 2X5900 I coudn't look at the remote

The 6100 was the very first UHF Pro receiver that Bell had in it's line up.

The 4700, 5100, 5800, 5900 and 6000 were all IR/UHF.

The 3200, 5200, 9200 & 9242, all with UHF Pro for the second Tuners.

The 1000, 2700, 3100, 3700, 4100, 4500 & 6141 were all IR only.

Did I miss any.?

They are IR and UHF pro...

You turn the blue thing were 2 is written ans it becomes UHF

I was sticking to the Remotes as "shipped" not getting into the wonderful world of customizing the Remotes which most current Bell CSR's will not know about anyway.

The reason I did not include the IR portion as well on the Remote #2's is that in normal Dual Mode the Remote #2 is used as UHF Pro as it is located in a room other than the one in which the receiver is located.

You also forgot to mention the Remote #2's for the 5200 also has a reversible tab on the Remote.

I looked at my original 9200 and 9242 remote to psot my reply...both showing IR/UHF Pro

As for the 5200 I didn't even know about that...the 5200 was no longer sold when I started working there. We therefore had no training (from what I recall) on that unit and I learned what I know about it mostly by getting calls from clients who had it or by comming on this site.

I am fully aware that the Remote #2 is BOTH but as most customers use Remote #2 in a seperate room to control the 9200/9242, I left out the IR just to keep the list concise.

By adding that is also does IR and/or UHF as well as UHF Pro, there are now going to be lots of thoroughly confused readers. Don't forget that it can be modified even more by moving the black A/B toggle switch visible when the Battery Cover is removed.

Well I brought the darn thing to a friends and it worked fine there....
Nothing has been added to our home since the problem started and I unpluged every other electronic device in the house and still had the same problem.
Bought the uhf antenna and now it works like a charm! Can even change the channels from under a blanket...wow.

Thanks for all the help guys

You should even be able to change the channels from the bathroom or from the kitchen when you are cooking. Good option when you are a parent!
