Remakes: What do you think??

Hey all,

So it seems that Hollywood is recycling idea after idea and something original seems so hard to come by.

What do you guys think of all the remakes/reboots that we're getting? One the one hand, we get films like Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, which takes an established idea somewhere new. The new Robocop reboot promises to do the same.

On the other hand, we get remakes of Lassie, The Smurfs and the Karate Kid (the horror, the horror...).

Do you love these remakes, hate them all, or are you conflicted?

Well I hear they are making a Bill and Ted remake which just makes me cringe. But would love to see a modern version of Barbarella (although I dont know a woman on the planet who has the sex appeal of Jane Fonda).
 
Like all films, it depenRAB on the film itself. If it's good, it's good. If it's bad, it's bad (which, of course, are entirely subjective opinion anyway). What it's based on, and what has come before has no bearing on it.

Oh, and I rather suspect that if you looked up the production statistics, remakes are still in a small minority compared to original productions. They just engender a lot of publicity, and get folks willing to froth at the mouth over bugger all.

I don't mind remakes if they serve some kind of purpose such as having a creative vision or beautifully updating something very very dated looking.

A complete rehash like Psycho 1998 is just a complete waste of time and talent.

Problem is that most of the remakes out there may have a vision but are let down by generic direction.

If a remake is something that had a simplistic story it's ok,but if it uses the original characterizations too,then that's just lazy.Unless it is required because the character(s) are too iconic to totally change.
 
I've watched a few crappy so-called horrors recently. I don't know how the US seem take pretty well received films from Asia and turn them in to utter shite.
 
It depenRAB on the quality of the remake, particularly the screenplay.

I've seen a few that were great, but generally I prefer something new if it's well written with good dialogue.

As for the Batman movies, I like the first two - Batman and Batman Returns, but the others were not my cup of tea.
