Remakes or Originals - better or worse

The original is usually the greatest, but sometimes a remake can at least be as enjoyable as the original. I've a soft spot for the version of To Be Or Not To Be with Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft, and the version of The 39 Steps with Kenneth More, just because both films are great fun to watch. But not better than the originals.

Yep, I can't think of one remake that's better than the original.

Why would a remake be better than the original, in any circumstances? It's copying something that has already been done very well, or people wouldn't have chose to remake it, and will inevitably fail.

Maybe if they started remaking s**t films, we'd end up with better results.

I think Oceans 11 is better than the original.

I also think that Heat is better than LA Takedown. Technically two different titles, but Heat was just a longer, larger budgeted film than LA Takedown and both were directed by Michael Mann.

However, even though the remake of Cape Fear was excellent, I do feel the original was better as Robert Mitchum was more menacing than Robert De Niro (and I love RDN movies) and the violence was left more to the imagination.

Overall, I do think that good original movies tend to be better than good remakes, but there are the occasional exception to the rule. The 1976 version of King Kong was pants compared to the 1933 version. It will be interesting to see what Peter Jackson does with his version this year.....

I can honestly say that most remakes have been disappointing, e.g. Sabrina - the original with Audrey Hepburn was definitely a classic, the remake with Julia Ormond, not so much.

One remake I am definitely not looking forward to is the remake of Pride and Prejudice. The 6 hour drama with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle was a classic and shouldn't be touched, especially not with the way they have cast it.

I stick with the originals all the way.

please tell me you are joking??!!!!!!!  im not a fan of the original but even i can say the remake has to be one of the biggest pile shite that has ever been made!!!!!

Some films can be better, or at least as good as the original.
Examples
The Blob -better (being re-made again I believe)
Oceans 11 - better
The Fly - better
Texas Chainsaw Massacre - as good but in a different way
Cape Fear - as good

Just saying???? Problem????

I've only seen the remake so I can't say which one is good and which one isn't so - i'll have to hire it out from my local video shop and see what its like.

The original of the blob was a classic b-movie, the remake a far inferior bigger budget b-movie.

True, but Oceans 11 was originally about the Rat Pack and the attitudes. The later version is technically a better film, but it's just more Hollywood fluff.

Very true.

Absolute bol*ocks

Yeah, i'll agree with the last one.

;)
