It is really interesting to read your posts. My whole dilemna started last March (07) with left hip pain. Same area your talking about. It is really hard to describe the pain to anyone which makes it so frustrating. I describe it like a deep constant ache like there is something in the way or like a knuckle just before it cracks. The hip xrays showed nothing so they diagnosed trochanteric hip bursitis and I went through rounRAB of injections. Then as time went on I started to feel like a big bee was attached to my left buttock and just stayed. Everyone kept telling me it was my back but I just complained about my hip. Then the pain started to travel down my leg. I was eventually diagnosed with disc issues and had an L5S1 microdiscetomy but the back md also wanted me to get an mri of my hip. So, when i got out of surgery for my back the back md said the hip mri showed a tear. I did not want to go through two separate recovery times so i told the reluctant hip md to go in and fix it. i am only 38 and was so tired of feeling old and not getting any exercise. When the hip md got in he said he couldn't find the tear but removed the trochanteric bursa since this had also been giving me so much pain. I had this second surgery 2 days after the back. This was all in Jan 08. Now, i am still in pain but not just in my hip but in the front of my thigh and back of my calf. Not sure if this is recovery/normal pain or another disc issue. i am so upset that i am still dealing with this. i feel like my thigh is just seized up in a constant cramp and i still have hip and bee sting pain in my left buttock. Not sure what to do at this point. I have been walking slow everyday, PT, massage therapy, pain meRAB, etc. Could it be another disc? Do people have back surgery and then find out another disc has gone too?
Sorry so long. Just so RELIEVED to find someone with the same symptoms since i can't find anyone on any of the boarRAB with back AND hip issues.

I am having hip pain that feels like its on the bone or deep inside. It occurerred after I jogged on an all weather track. I also have muscle pain in the left side of my back .Can these pains be related?

If this is the first time you have had this pain, I doubt it would be what I am about to describe to you....A lower lurabar disc that is damaged and pressing on a nerve could be causing pain in the hip area. My MIL had a deep hip pain for at least a year, had a couple cortisone shots thinking it was bursitis, and finally was diagnosed with a L4-L5 spondylolisthesis. This is a slippage of one vertebra over the top of another vertebra which usually results in the sciatic nerve being pinched. It was referring out to her hip, causing a great deal of pain.

Also a tear in the disc can cause this type of pain. Again, some of the contents of the disc can squish out and press into a nerve root, causing referred pain.

Unless you have had problems with your lurabar spine in the past, I doubt this is what is happening with you!

Try icing your lower back and laying off running for a few days to see if it gets better. Also take something like advil or aleve in the event there is inflammation.

Nice - I am also having front of thigh pain. It's usually cramp-like pain, but then I also started feeling a dull nerve pain down the front, but in short bursts. And before that, I had some sharp pangs of what felt like nerve pain just above my left knee. I was also getting spasms & cramps all over like you wouldn't believe. Then I got Lyrica and Soma. I didnt't think they were helping that much until recently (especially yesterday) when I didn't take anything b/c I was driving around (and they both make me dizzy feeling). Well OMGGGG the cramps I was having yesterday were awful again. And I didnt' think my meRAB were working that well...but I guess not taking the meRAB and feeling the cramps especially, how painful they were again, makes me now think that my meRAB are working at least somewhat. Even for my nerve pains b/c that was more prominent yesterday, too. However, none of these meRAB does anything for those deep pains i feel in both hips and pelvis area. (of course for all I know, I say my hip areas but since mine isn't in the front, whatever i'm referring to might not really be the hip area).

I had herniated discs L-3,L4,L5 (hopefully fine after surgery 3 weeks ago) I had hip pain so badly I thought maybe I needed a hip replacement. Dr took xrays, said it was coming from the back and hips were ok.

OMG, your issues sound so much like me. Thank you....I was starting to feel like a hypochondriac or crazy. The deep cramping and aching are killer but so hard to describe. Your reply has given me some sanity back...at least for a day anyway!

Mine is like Blue Atlas and yours where my pelvis hits the top of my thigh in the front. However, if I were to put my hand on my hips it hurts in the front like someone is digging their fingertips in and when you have your hanRAB on your hips like the thurab is also digging in at that part of my butt cheek/hip. It is so hard to verbalize the kind of pain. Sometimes sharp, sometimes a deep ache that nags at me really bad, and then sometimes the front of my thigh seizes up. Just went back to my MD and they are trying Soma instead of Flexeril and Celebrex instead of Mobic. I also take Lyrica to help keep the nerve problems down from my L5 S1 surgery in Jan 08. I am not sure what Blue Atlas had done. I did not have a fusion or anything just (what i thought would be as simple/end of the suffering) microdiskectomy. I also had hip surgery 2 days later (bursa out, exploration) that i have written in previous posts. I hope your pain gets better. Blue Atlas has been so helpful and so have many other people on this board. We all really care about each other and can relate to the frustration, pain, accomplishments, and setbacks. Get well, b

I've had pain in both hip areas since after my surgery. I didn't notice it until I walked around in the stores for a long time and every time I tried to walk for a length of time, it was hurting. Where I feel is like this: if you put your hanRAB on your hips (sides), where to be able to just slide your hanRAB down into your body at an angle right there, that's where I feel it. It happens when walking or standing too long, though it's been hurting worse for shorter walking distances over time. Its a real deep ache and feels as if I have a huge heavy cement block sitting on top of my hips and pelvis. Walking aggravates it the most for me and I find myself having to bend forward again. It's always there, but now I have a real problem walking just 100 to 200 feet or so. I had my Hips MRI'd early last year and that just found mild arthritis and possible spur in my right hip, but I don't have too much pain from the front of my hip areas. Sometimes it bothers me when sitting too long & trying to get up but it's the deep down side of hips areas that bother me most. My hip doc thought my pain was back related, but on flexion & extension x-rays, there didnt appear to be an instability at that time. Then last July or so.....one day i had to crouch down and stretch to reach for something. I got up and whammo....felt something in my spine and it felt like someone just stabbed me with a hot knife. Then when I started to walk, i felt horrible nerve pain radiating around both outer hip areas and somewhat into my groin areas (on both sides). Then the back spasms started too. I felt like a mummy trying to walk...I had to shuffle but not really use my hips, kind of had to shuffle my whole body w/ one leg, then the other, and so on. IT lasted 2 to 3 weeks and the nerve pain pretty much went away. Then the same nerve pain episodes happened about 4 or 5 more times since then (except I hadnt felt the pain inside my spine those next times). So I am convinced that the nerve pains around my outer hip areas are from my spine b/c of the way it all started. And with the first episode in this area, I felt that hot knife pain in my upper lurabar spine area. But that deep aching pain in my hip areas never went away and in fact has gotten worse over time and I'm not sure of what is causing this part.

Do you have the pain in the hips in the front of your body? (Like where your upper thigh meets your groin? Or is the pain more on the sides?

Thanks...and no, you certainly are not crazy! But I know why you start thinking that, as many of us have started feeling that way. I was thinking that recently, too, as not only all that was happening, I was getting cramps & spasms all over including in my upper body again. And it's like a chain reaction...once it starts in one spot, it spread all over the place, I feel as if my whole body is being put through a ringer. And I've been getting nerve pains in so many places, I kept thinking..how is this possible?????? I felt like someone had a voodoo doll of me! HOwever, now that i've been taking the lyrica and soma for a while I guess it all has calmed down somewhat. It's hard to notice it until, like yesterday, when I didnt take anything. I do wish I knew exactly what is causing all this as I know you wish you knew for yourself.

I am currently taking Soma and Lyrica (plus some other meRAB for other things). Be careful with the Soma because it can make you extremely dizzy! Of course it might not affect everyone that way, but it's one of the more common effects. You probably do not want to take the lyrica and soma at the same time.....I did once and OMG I was so out of it & dizzy for at least 1/2 the day. I am finding, though, that taking both regularly does seem to help me somewhat. (I noticed that on some days I had to drive around so I didnt take the meRAB....and I had ALOT more pain on those days).

By the way it was Baybreeze, Blue Atlas, and Marlos mom who have been the one's who have replied to me and helped me the most. I always get Blue Atlas and BayBreeze mixed up. I just want them to know how much they have helped me feel sane in this insanity. Kind of feel like I am up on stage accepting an Oscar and forgetting everyone's name! I will watch out for the Soma. So far so good. No dizziness, etc. Will keep you all posted. b

When I first hurt my back, I complained that it was my hip for the longest time and everyone kept saying no its your back. Finally they humored me and took xrays, guess what?? My hip pain was coming from my back. I guess that is why they have the MD license. :D

I have sacroliac issues, and recently I've notice that the SI pain is less but there more hip pain where the pelvis meets the femur (instead of where it meets the spine: SI).

Question: are your hip pains in that area, where your leg meets your pelvis? And is it worse at any certain time of day?

Thank You, Nice...that's what we're all here for, to help each other out - whether it be with advice or moral support, or you can just vent away if need be. And I'm sure you will probably have advice on your experiences that you can offer to others as well.
