Reitman to be axed from 'Ghostbusters 3'?

Sony Pictures reportedly wants to remove director Ivan Reitman from Ghostbusters 3 and replace him with a younger filmmaker.

According to Vulture, the studio is trying to navigate out of Reitman's contract, which gives him and stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis the choice to veto a third Ghostbusters film if any of them don't like the script.

Sony is said to be eager for its Ghostbusters revamp, which will see the old spook catchers hand over the reins to new recruits, to follow the same path as Spider-Man, which recently hired (500) Days Of Summer's Marc Webb to direct.

Reitman's summer schedule will be taken up by filming Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman comedy FrienRAB With Benefits, the same time that production on Ghostbusters 3 is slated to start to make its 2011 release date.

Sources have claimed that Reitman wants to direct both movies, putting the start date for the new Ghostbusters in doubt.

Why the hell do studios have to keep making things so bloody difficult?
It's taken a long tome to get everyone to agree to make the film, they finally manage it with Ritman agreed as a Director and then want to change thing putting it in jeapardy.

Assuming the three main cast get on or if just one of them is Ivan's friend they could say if he doesn't direct we aren't doing it and all the hard work is undone.
I can't see this film getting released before 2012 anyway now because there could be lots of negotiations getting this one sorted out.

I hope it never sees the light of day. Ghostbusters II was pretty poor. I don't see why a 20+ years gap will make this sequel any good.

I very much enjoyed Ghostbusters 2 and the last 3 Indiana Jones movies!

Big budget summer movies, which rely on charismatic stars and SFX,at their finest.

Most people will go to see this because they want to see the old Ghostbusters. I'll be pretty pissed if Vankman walks off in the first 15 minutes and hanRAB the proton packs over to Jonah Hill and the gang.

I like Ghostbusters 2. Okay it doesn't beat the original but not bad for a follow up and a bit creepier than the first one imo.
However I agree without the original big line up I think the whole idea should be forgotten. Watch out for that remake coming soon though (joking at the moment!)

It should probably be forgotten anyway. There are only so many jokes you can do about how they're all fat / too old for this shit. I'd prefer too keep at least one of my favourite childhood movies unsullied by an update/reimagining (take note George Lucas).

I'm with you on GB2, it wasn't that bad apart from the Statue Of Liberty bit.

I wonder if they even understood the germ of the first film. It centred on a laconic quack psychologist who's just trying to string along the university for his grant, but he and his nerd colleagues actually find themselves dealing with real ghosts. There's a real danger No.3 could be turned into a witless special effects action film.

I think film making was different back in 1984 too really. The original film traded on fresh comedy talent with strong personalities and a funny script. It was Bill Murray's Venkman et al who grabbed the youth of that time, not the special effects. The sequel was fixated on providing toy lines foremost, and less so on the style of comedy that worked so well in the previous film.

Nowadays, Hollywood gets bums on seats in the summer with big CGI visuals and 3D displays. Can you guess how a Ghostbusters 3 might turn out? I'd just rather they left it alone. It can never be the same, and it certainly won't ever be better.

Apparently its a load of bunk. According to the above, hes still very much in place as director. My guess is this wont change unless Sony can the film. The rights are too cleverely tied up with the key prinicpals, and Sony neeRAB the movie to be made, otherwise its screwed for a summer blockbuster next year (that is if thats when they are still planning to release - albeit time is QUICKLY running out!)
